Essential: The Nemesis's Target, most commonly the Obsession. Non-Essential survivors will not be focused, hooked and/or killed as long as they are not the Essential, they do not pose an active hinderance to killing the Essential, and there is currently an Essential in play.
Good Will: Survivors with Good Will are exempt from becoming Essential. Most commonly occurs via rule E4.
S.T.A.R.S: The following survivors (Jill Valentine. Rebecca Chambers, Chris Redfield), are considered members of S.T.A.R.S

M1: If the first survivor located in a game is the obsession or a group that contains the obsession the obsession will become Essential.
M2: If the first survivor located is NOT the obsession, chase will begin, and game afoot will convert them into the obsession. That survivor is now the Essential.
M3: All non-Essential's will be avoided UNLESS they are trying to protect the Essential in which case aggression will be displayed towards them. If a non-Essential survivor manages to become the Obsession by any means, they will become the new Essential.
M4: If the Essential dies or escapes, a new target will be ascertained, and this cycle continues.

E1: Rules M1, M2 and M4 will be exempt in the case there is a member of S.T.A.R.S, and the S.T.A.R.S member(s) will be considered Essential taking priority over every other rule. This will also mean the other (non S.T.A.R.S affiliated) survivors will be incapable of becoming Essential even after all S.T.A.R.S Essential's have are removed from play.
E2: If Carlos Oliveira is a survivor, they are unable to become Essential due to being a member of U.B.C.S
E3: If The Nemesis likes the way a specific survivor is playing, The Nemesis will put them as last priority for Rule M4 UNLESS it violates Rule E1
E4: If the Nemesis REALLY likes the way a specific survivor(s) is playing, the Nemesis will enact Good Will towards them.

If the Nemesis's teammate is the Mastermind, and the Mastermind has a S.T.A.R.S skin. The Nemesis will do everything in its power to ensure the Mastermind gets as few cages as possible.
