Whether you purchase the game at $3 or its new increased retail price of $5, the game is an incredible value. While the game's 2D art style and gaming mechanics are simple, the game is surprisingly addicting and just plain fun. The game is segmented in 15-30 min runs which make it very compatible with the steam deck's on the go playstyle. Even at it's cheap price point, the devs are also still updating the game and adding new characters and modes. My one gripe with the game is that it runs really poorly once you hit the end of a run and the enemies flood the screen but I believe the devs are working on a fix for that (experimental fix now).

2024 and they're still adding updates and collaborations

Fun game worth the price tag but a tad bit repetitive within each season. Appreciate the developers adding new games, cosmetics from crossovers and crowns (premium cosmetic currency) more accessible the second season though.

Edit: I wrote this review between season 1 and 2 but I have to give credit where it is due. The developers have put a lot of love into this game constantly shaking up the games for each new season and constantly adding crossovers and promotions.

First Yakuza I've played and I was not disappointed. Since the original Yakuza first launched on the PS2, the biggest issue was accessibility. The games were always Playstation console exclusives and were not easy to find due to their low supply in the US. The series was always classified as a niche game so maybe that's why they were never really widely released. With that said, I'm glad to see Yakuza expanding to other platforms such as PC and reaching a wider audience now. Hopefully it's success will bring on other PC releases in the series.

Yakuza is probably the most Japanese game I've ever played. The linear story is told in anime-like episodes / cliffhangers. It's subquests and side content oozes with Japanese culture. You can even visit popular Japanese shops like Don Quijote in the game. I would say the way it parodies Japan culture is similar to how GTA parodies American culture, but other than that the games are not that similar. While Yakuza is a sandbox game, the environment is somewhat limited where you can't attack random people or steal cars but more than makes it up with a plethora of mini games and its outrageous subplots. If you have an interest in Japanese culture, please do yourself a favor and pick up this game.

This game is packed to the brim with content. I'm almost 100 hours in and I haven't gotten past the first Act. Personally I feel its best enjoyed in small / medium length sessions. If you decide to binge and do every side quest, you'll begin to see the repetition and get burned out eventually. Take your time with every quest and pay attention to all the details to fully appreciate the expert storytelling / immersion into the real world. Something you do 20 hours ago can change parts of the world you didn't really expect.

I would recommend this game to anyone who considers themselves an avid gamer. It's a game every gamer should have one their resume.
