Most of the negative reviews are from the disappointing launch, so ignore them. Hello Games clearly haven't finished the game upon launch, yet Sony still pushed for release. Of course, the easy thing to do is to keep the money and leave the game to wither and die, but Hello Games has proved to its loyal community that it's not done with the game. The 3 current patches have added tons of new stuff, and the game is more or less a completely different game from what it was a year ago, especially now that HG has learned not to promise anything and just drop us the content (so there's no expectations to live up to). Would definitely recommend, this game will only get better.
