Ahh, Star Wars: Republic Commando. Where to begin with this masterpiece? This is one of the best Star Wars games I have ever played. There are so many good things about this game, it's tough to write a coherent review that doesn't drag on for hours, but dammit, I'll try.

+Pros:

+Gimmick: Every single-player first person shooter game has a gimmick, Bioshock has Vigors, Half-Life has the Gravity Gun, DOOM (2016) has the Glory Kill System, etc. Gimmicks in these games are what sets them apart from the others in the genre, making them unique and memorable. And Star Wars: Republic Commando has earned a place among these goliaths of the FPS genre for it's incredibly unique and fun gimmick; Being a Commando. Direct your team, protect them, heal them, plan ahead, and execute your mission with extreme prejudice. I hate to have to say it, but this really makes you feel like a commando. You feel connected with your brothers, and you feel responsible for all that happens to you and your team.

+Freakin' Star Wars: ...need I say more for this point? I don't think so. It's Star Wars, what's not to love?

+Enemies: This game contains a large variety of different enemies from the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and their diverse character designs result in very dynamic, and action-packed combat. Clankers, Destroyers, SBDs, Geonosians, and even Magma Guards. And none of them feel like a hassle to defeat.

-Cons:

-Playtime: Simply put, this game is a bit short. I think it takes about 8 hours to beat, plus it has no bonus content, or upgrades which truly hurt the game's replayability. Now that I have finished it, I don't see myself touching it again until I forget most of it, which would be roughly 5 years, if I were have to guess.

-Optimization: The game's graphics settings are... weird. The resolutions for this game are bizarre, and cranking the graphical settings up to the max either causes the game to CTD, or become really buggy. I had some weird lighting issues, and mushed textures for the majority of the game.

=Conclusion:

The important thing to take away from this review, is that Star Wars: Republic Commando is not only a great Star Wars game, but it is also just a great game in general. It's obvious the developers put gameplay first, and then the Star Wars theme on top, resulting in one of the greatest shooters ever.

And so, I have to give Star Wars: Republic Commando:

10 Commandos going Commando out of 10

Truly a gem of game. It's a pity that a game like this in the Star Wars universe is most likely never going to happen. We will probably never see a Star Wars: Republic Commando 2, or at least not so long as EA is running everything Star Wars. Come to think of it, I think that is for the best. I just hope this franchise can make a return, but a proper one, with a proper company at the helm.
