While I do recommend this game, it is nowhere near perfect. And most of that is to do with the narrative, of course.

Gameplay-wise, probably the best Resident Evil to date, seriously, probably the most fun I’ve had playing a game in years. It is kind of sad Grace is only the focus at the beginning, then Leon takes the mantle at a little over the halfway point but, that worked in it’s favor, because combat as Leon felt so fun and rewarding, while playing as Grace it felt like a punishment, your real priority with her is to solve puzzles and evade enemies (which can be fun.. sometimes), killing them only when absolutely needed (like in puzzle areas). I wish Grace wasn’t so one-dimensional, she is simply carried by events and hardly adds any substance. She is quite literally THE plot device. She deserves better than to be a foil, and practically nothing else.

Narratively, the plot is just.. lacking in any actual depth, and the ending doesn’t help. There’s only actual consequence in the fake bad ending. Why does Leon get all this immunity but Ethan Winters had to die? Is it just so they could bring Leon back to make more sales? I did enjoy the nostalgia pandering but doing all of it right at the end feels so.. scummy. It just feels like compensation for how the plot is built on top of information that is simply withheld, and unknown to the player rather than a genuine mystery. The plot is way too linear. The moral dilemma at the end, is shoehorned in like the choice towards the end of RE7 to pick Zoe or Mia, which… also felt ridiculously stupid… at least in this game you’ll probably pick the “Destroy” ending and see what happens if you listen to Leon vs. the “Release” ending, listening to Zeno and it blowing up in his face. Where is the weight to my decision? Chris Redfield saves the day anyways?? It’s just so anti-climatic.

I sincerely hope Resident Evil 10 isn’t as creatively bankrupt as this installment, just a stronger narrative that isn’t built off of pandering to an audience through nostalgia and one-dimensional storytelling.

Everyone who plays Saiyan characters should be violated with a wooden plank. Freeza was right.
