An extremely promising foundation for pushing the limits of a city-builder.

While still want of some visual variety (and performance polish), the rich detail in simulating the organic essence of a city is truly remarkable. And though the mechanisms of that detail can be opaque to the player at times, its presence at all is undeniable proof of the care Colossal Order has taken in trying to capture the sublime beauty of modern cities.

Insanely fun. It's absolutely criminal that this game isn't more popular.

After a couple of hours, Unexplored 2 seems like a game with the potential to have a place among the great roguelites of recent memory. It evokes the same great gameplay elements that roguelites do better than any other genre: challenge, risk, build-theorizing, and exploration - while having created a world that feels lived-in, reactive, and beautiful.

What stands out the most to me about Unexplored 2 is the developers' care for building an ambience - which I think sets this game apart from any other in the genre. I love hearing the sounds of rustling bushes and scurrying mice while shadows stretch across the landscape in the evening sun. I love it. And I think the developers do well by pulling you back into those environments at every opportunity while traveling through the overworld. Unfortunately, there are some persistent performance hiccups while traveling on the overworld, and loading into those levels, and can make that experience feel disjointed and awkward. And that's frustrating to feel because when everything *does* come together it does so *so* well.

Obviously it's early in the the life of this release, so it's easy to forgive issues along those lines. However, I think if they aren't resolved - or at least lessened to some degree - it could really come to hurt the game moving forward. That said, I'm staying optimistic that the Ludomotion team can find ways to smooth out these technical bumps and deliver a truly incredible game.

Early Access Review
One of the best games for fulfilling the theory-crafting that makes rogue-likes great:

"Can I make my attack speed insanely high and crit on every attack?" - Yes!
"Can I make it so I kill one creature and have the resulting domino'ed explosions kill everything else" - Yes!
"Can I move at the speed of light and have my army of drones do all of the fighting while I occupy a superposition incapable of being touched by mortal beings" - Yes!

Combined with its incredibly well-designed characters, creatures, environments, and soundtrack, Risk of Rain 2's excellent execution of power-fantasy (if you want it) or grueling difficulty (if you'd prefer) is enough to keep you playing for tens, if not hundreds, of hours.

An impeccable transition from 2D to 3D by the Hopoo team.

Certainly the greatest video game story I've ever experienced. Done with so much purpose... perfect.
