Early Access Review
I posted a positive review on January 8, 2018 @ 3:56pm when I had 56.5 hours in this game.

However, it's now the tail end of 2019. And it's with a heavy heart that I state that I can no longer support this game. Two major issues:

First, this game was originally focused on VR, and this is what first drew me in. Against Gravity (the devs) have taken multiple steps away from that audience in pursuit of desktop non-VR and mobile. They have pushed out updates that degraded performance on VR in exchange for better performance on mobile, alienating their original audience.
I understand that MMOs require lots of players, but is it really worth upsetting existing players to get new ones faster? Gives the impression that AG is short-sighted.

Second, this game has paid lootboxes. You can straight up buy Tokens with real money, and then spend them on "Unique Boxes". Real money gambling is absolutely unacceptable for a game rated for kids 10 years and up, I cannot believe we gamers have to tell game devs that.
The most expensive lootbox is USD$1.14 for a chance, just a chance at getting a specific item you want. And that's with the most generous conversion rate from the $49.99 token bundle. It doesn't sound like a lot, but it adds up over time. You can easily spend far more money on this game than you are willing to, likely unknowingly.
I'm very disappointed that a company that states it's for it's community implement a known shady and manipulative monetization tactic on children who haven't fully developed their logical skills yet. It's disgusting. Truly disgusting policies by AG. I'd rather they'd drop the F2P aspect than go this route.

In conclusion, Rec Room has fallen far from grace. What was once one of VR's beacons has turned into a Roblox wannabe with lootboxes.
Roblox's community and platform is a dumpster fire (to the point of them shutting down their forums because it was just so toxic) but it's engine is MUCH more powerful than Rec Room's, allowing actual coding in Lua. The only real thing going for Rec Room is it's community is not 99% screeching kids and they actually give a damn about moderation. But if AG continues down this short-sighted path, I'm not sure if they will even have those left in the end.

Sorry you're feeling disappointed in Rec Room, Dan. Perhaps this will make you feel better. Everything in our boxes can be bought directly with either tokens you earn by playing games or tokens you buy (totally optional). So if someone wants a particular item, there's no need to buy a box and risk not getting it - they can just buy the item they want. Also, there's no randomness in the rarity of the items you get from the box (e.g. a 2-star box will always give you a 2-star item). With those points in mind, I'd guess most people are buying boxes because they think getting a random item is fun.

Also every purchase in game using tokens or real world currency requires a confirmation step so its unlikely any purchases are happening on accident.

Additionally we saw much better performance across all platforms after the Oculus Quest and iOS work was integrated (both are mobile platforms), since there was around 6 months of optimization work involved that benefited everyone. If you saw worse performance at this point it was likely an issue with your particular machine and you should reach out to support! Support@recroom.com

Cheers
