In my opinion, COOP is where ARMA really shines though, and mods are close to obligatory for having a good time with ARMA. And as I said, Dslyecxi is worth checking out, some of his videos are amazing. If you need any help, just add me as a friend, ARMA has the steepest learning curve there is :P
Most of the servers have been around 60-70 players, but the maps are so large, if your not in a clan - it would tough to find other players/combat zones. Even with a 120 player server, it feels desolate in most areas.
However, if you are planning on playing on public, I highly, highly reccomend checking out a mod called "Tactical battlefield", it's the only reasonable traditional FPS game mode there is, but you'd need to download a mod in order to play.
