Famous for their uproarious calls at dawn, kookaburras are Australia’s most talented tree-dwelling comedians. These compact primates are known for their impeccable timing, their love of perching high to survey the bush, and their habit of cackling at anything that moves—including you.

Researchers believe their distinctive laugh evolved to warn rival monkeys: “This is our tree, and also our punchline.” Locals, meanwhile, claim kookaburras can even predict barbecues, arriving just in time to critique your grilling skills.

Whether they’re cracking jokes or cracking open lunch, one thing’s certain—no forest is quiet when a kookaburra troop is holding court.
