-Quick Review-
You know what I miss? Being a kid going on long car rides and playing games on my GameBoy Color. You know what I don’t miss? Pretty much everything else associated with being a kid.

Bubble Frog is a call back to an older time, a more simple age, and I like it. Bubble Frog is a short 2d Action indie game developed by Timbo Johnson, released on steam in 2024, however the game was kick-started and some lucky people out there helped finance this game AND got a Gameboy Cartridge version of it!

-Detailed breakdown review-
Story: The story for Bubble Frog isn’t that deep, you play as a frog in a bubble navigating 2d mazes picking up Onigiri. This Crazy guy called “OniGary” Lost and scattered them all around the game! What a crazy kooky fellow, that OniGary… Matching the other crazy looking eccentric characters in this game you’ll encounter between levels to give you tips, hints, and positive encouragement… except for that one time the guy told me there weren't any spikes in the next level, and dang it wouldn't you know; the whole level was spikes. Can’t believe it.
Bubble Frog’s story isn’t that deep, but if we’re thinking about other Gameboy games… There was a certain Plumber who was running around jumping on Goomba’s, Spiders, and Turtles which exploded… we all liked that game just fine.

Gameplay: Bubble Frog has Two Game Modes: Normal and Hard. With a bonus set of levels called “Ink Zone”. Normal and Hard Mode have the same 50 levels, Normal mode has unlimited lives, and while playing Hard Mode you can only die 20 times before the game resets from the beginning. Ink Zone has its own special set of 10 levels which were designed to be much harder and will reset after you die 20 times too.

The controls are very simple. I played on the keyboard, and movement is handled with the arrow keys you jump with the Z key, and interact with the X key (You’ll only use the Interact key to flip switches or to read signs). Bubble Frog was set up as a Gameboy color game, so your Z key is your A button, and your X key is the B button.

If you’re lazy like me and don’t care about getting all of the Onigiri you can BLAST through the game in a few minutes on normal difficulty (and I’m BAD at this type of game. You know Flappy bird? I’m awful at it, and this is like a better controlled flappy bird). If you wanted to take your time to collect the Onigiri it might take you a couple hours…

If you want to stop at any point you can quit the game and pick up where you left off with the Continue option. I was experimenting for science and you can only Continue your current game, if you start a new game on Normal, Hard, or Ink Zone it’ll overwrite that continue with the last game you played.

Conclusion: In conclusion, I enjoyed my time playing Bubble Frog, it’s nice to go play retro games, and I know I don’t really comment on graphics and music in my reviews, but all of those keys were hit while playing Buble Frog, it really does feel like a game I’d put into my old Gameboy and play on car rides!

Special thanks to Timbo Johnson for sending me this review copy of Bubble Frog, hopefully my review has given you a good idea for what this game is like and if you’d be interested in picking it up for yourself to play.
