Played Character Route Order: Damien ◈ Robert ◈ Joseph ◈ Mat ◈ Craig ◈ Hugo ◈ Brian

Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator doesn't really live up to what the store page tells you, nor to most of the positive reviews it received. You're better off reading positive as well as negative reviews to get an idea of the actual content. I'm not going to say that Dream Daddy is a bad Visual Novel, it's just not what one might expect at first.

I have mixed feelings about this game, and I can't deny that I'm slightly disappointed. You see, it was one of those games I was really looking forward to since it claims to be a BxB dating sim. I know it probably sounds stupid, but I usually wait before I purchase a game that I really want, just to build up some more excitement, or to pass time until the game is running properly. The longer I wait, the more I'm actually anticipating the moment when I finally decide to play it. After seeing that this title is so hyped on Steam and YouTube, my expectations naturally grew to an extent where it is almost unavoidable not to feel slightly disappointed now and then. Nevertheless, after figuring out that one year after release was enough time of waiting, I finally started to play it. Alas, it didn't turn out like I hoped it would.

Let me start by saying that the character creator is simply atrocious, awful even. Maybe I'm exaggerating here, but I was really disappointed. All character creations turn out looking extremely odd and flat, especially in direct comparison with already existing characters. It's merely a choice between having a plain or hideous-looking character. You don't have a big selection regarding haircuts and faces, but you can create the uglier version of some celebrities just fine. Before you ask; yes, I do feel terrible that I actually had the intention to use a real person for a dad-dating simulator. I suppose it's okay since there isn't much sexual interaction, and let's be perfectly honest here; Dream Daddy is not really a dating simulator to begin with. That was the very first time I felt a little discouraged, but okay I thought, many games with a character creator are facing this issue, and it's nothing I'm not used to after playing my fair share of RPGs with customizable characters.

I quickly got over it and oh boy, I was SO excited to actually play it. You can choose between seven unique dads, honestly, I had a hard time deciding on my first daddy to romance (why does it sound so wrong?). After reaching the end of my first playthrough with Damien, I was still pretty happy, even if I felt that it's lacking romance, steamy situations, or other things you would actually expect to read about in a dating sim. But as in many Visual Novels with several romanceable characters, you always have some routes that simply aren't very romantic and that don't leave you in a puddle of your own nosebleed. At first, I thought Damien was the "not focusing too much on romance interaction and rather being platonic friends"-route, but I was wrong, so very wrong. Damien's romance path was one of the few routes that felt more like my not-so-handsome main character is indeed dating someone.

Robert is also an expectation in some ways, especially at the beginning. When you meet him at the bar for the first time, you have the chance to flirt and to go home with him. If you do so, however, Robert starts to avoid you. Nice! *slow clap* I want to read about kisses, love confessions, sexual tension, relationship development, and lewd situations when I play a Boys Love game, even fluffy romance would be fine with me, but neither was provided nor executed well enough to my liking. Damien was in spite of everything my favorite, and among Robert's route, also pretty much the only route where I truly enjoyed reading everything.

I need to say this though; your in-game daughter Amanda has such a great personality, I really loved her! I'll never have own children, because I don't want any, but I wouldn't mind having her as a daughter! I'd even dare to say that Amanda is one of the few true selling points this game has to offer, and it's obvious that she is the best-developed character in Dream Daddy. As a Naruto fan, I also loved the easter egg about the infamous Naruto x Sasuke shipping that could be found in Damiens route, even if I don't ship these two at all.

The artwork is really pretty, I liked the pastel-ish color scheme a lot and the variety of very different looks of all daddies, even if every dad only has one CG per route, which is certainly not a lot.

Although it wasn't quite what I was hoping for, it was still an amusing experience, and the characters are, except for Brian, very likable. You read a ton of puns, and they were really amusing at first, but after the 100. pun it started to bore the hell out of me and simply failed to entertain me any longer. I wouldn't really count that as a negative aspect of the game, but I also didn't enjoy playing the mini-games and simply wanted to note that at this point.

Now, let's talk about the real cause why I'm rather displeased. Many people don't mention it, and I only found out while trying to go for 100%, but the game was incomplete for over a year. Now you might say: "But they fixed it! You are not being subjective here, your review sucks so much", but that's not going to cut it for me. I admit that I'm probably being a bit too narrow-minded here, but there are two kinds of developers that I simply refuse to support; liars and developers that don't care at all about their products and not even thinking for a second about their customers. Game Grumps did both: they lied, and they didn't care about the product they were offering for a pretty long time. The cult ending with Joseph could be found in the game dictionary but it was unplayable, you couldn't obtain access to it normally. That was until Game Grumps released their game for PS4. That's when they made it also possible for owner of the Steam version to reach that particular ending and to finally get the last achievement.

Right at the beginning, before you can decide if you are up to playing the cult ending or not, you get a warning notification, which says that they didn't plan to add the cult ending after the official release, but why was there an achievement for it the whole time if they never intended to make it accessible, I wonder? They didn't add the Escape from Margarita Zone achievement afterward, it was there since the official release of Dream Daddy on Steam back in 2017. It is pretty obvious from my point of view that the devs lied for whatever reason. They do had time to advertise more stuff to make more money out of a popular franchise for the time being though. By the way, the cult ending hardly takes ten minutes to finish, which is disappointing if you keep in mind that some people have waited over one year to be able to play it.

To sum things up: Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator is, albeit being a rather short-lived experience, still entertaining enough to recommend it. All rambling and false advertisement aside, I do recommend this Visual Novel for that what it truly is: a daddy/buddy simulator. It's a pretty good deal if you can grab it on sale.

Thanks for your advice, I guess. Maybe you should inform yourself better about games before you purchase them as well, just to avoid dealing with EA, and Origin in the future. :)

Mhm... what does Game Grumps have to do with a game they've developed, and published, I wonder? By the way, I've read your Dragon Age Origins Review... what does EA have to do with Dragon Age? :lolFumi: You are blaming me for something you are doing yourself. Maybe you should stop being so hypocritical.

My rambling is only a little part of the whole review, and anyone that doesn't care about the doings of game devs in general is free to skip it. It was something that spoiled my experience with this game, so I wrote about it.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the game, I enjoyed it as well, but that doesn't change the fact that the advertisement for it is misleading. People that usually play Boys Love games simply have different expectations of one, including myself.

Personally, I purchased it because it is advertised as a Dating Simulator, otherwise I would have waited until I'm able to get it in a cheap bundle, like you did.

What the hell does Game Grumps have to do with this game? Your rambling was not at all helpful or informative...

I don't play this type of game normally; I got this from Humble Bundle (pay what you want) and gave it a try. Thankfully I went in blind and open-minded because I actually enjoyed the toned-down material myself.

Try to appreciate it for what it is or make sure you look for explicit content warnings in the future.

Ich fand das Spiel echt gut! Und deine Review gefällt mir auch, die sind immer so ausführlich geschrieben. Manchmal echt hilfreich wenn man sich wegen eines Spieles unschlüssig ist :nekoheart:

Thank you. :) Well, it's still worth a try, especially at the current price, but it really isn't the type of game that gives you nosebleed, or heart attacks. :Thunder_Girl_4:

I loved your review, I got a feeling that now I need to think two times before I buy this game. I hyped this game for the very first moment it was on sale, but I got the feeling that now the game gonna be just a casual play-time and not the "nosebleed and heart attack" I was expecting :nftd_scared:
thank you for sharing your thoughts!! :sakurabeachmomokolaugh:

I totally get where you're coming from. I have mixed feelings about this game as well. Part of me finds it cute and I get a nice chuckle from all the "Dad puns," but another part of me feels like this is meant to be more of a parody of a dating sim than an actual dating sim, ya know?
