Since my review of the game, The Falconeer has greatly improved and I'm sure that it is definitely a lot better in every way than what I've last experienced. That being said, I'm keeping my recommendation as of now (reason in the comment), but please don't take this as a reason to not give the game a chance, especially if you're a fan of such games, and is a lot better than playing with a controller than I am.

The Falconeer is a game where you'll get to ride on the back of a mighty warbird and engage in intense aerial combat in the skies.

Now, I've tried playing the game with both controller and keyboard+mouse, and I still feel like the controls here are lacking and awkward. It's not as easy to navigate on a warbird in this game than say a spaceship in Everspace. Ended up opting for the keyboard and mouse since that's the one I'm most familiar with.

The Falconeer has some issues too like cross hairs just disappearing during dogfights, making me a sitting duck basically, or that stamina doesn't seem to regenerate fast enough, especially when you want to quickly cover huge distances. It's very hard to aim in this game too. I've struggled a bit in Everspace but at least I'm hitting something most of the time. In this game though, I'm barely making any hits.

With that being said, the game has plenty of good stuff going for it - It has a huge open ocean world with some interesting POIs and natural occurrences like waterspouts and thunderstorms that you are free to explore; lots seemingly randomly-generated quests to farm money from (besides the chapter-based story quests); well-varied though somewhat limited weapon and warbird upgrades to buy; and if you've completed the necessary prerequisites, you can even buy yourself a new and better warbird.

**Adding that I sometimes get motion sickness from playing certain games - I'm looking at you Mirror's Edge - but I'm happy to say that this isn't the case in The Falconeer. Hope this helps!

Overall
After giving the game a shot, I'm convinced that this game isn't for me. Flying my warbird during combat just feels like I'm struggling - futilely I might add - against the game, and perhaps the game just has a higher skill ceiling that I can't reach at the moment and I just don't have to patience to sit through hours of trial and error just to get the hang of its dogfights.

However, if you're a veteran space sim player, I reckon this game might pique your interest. It's not space-themed but it's still a game with some pretty intriguing world-building and beautiful graphics. Might be worth a look.

Hi there I have waited to respond to your review

But at this time there have been close to 10 updates that fix issues. many of which you describe. There have also been two content updates, that add new mission mechanics, and totally new styles of weapons such as guided rockets. Enemy AI has been improved significantly as well. The list of added features us quite large, but stuff like custom waypoints, edge target indicators, other quality of life indicators, new tutorial missions and extra guidance is significant.

Mouse +Kb have had improvements, but I've classified them as experimental, the game is now set to "does not support keyboard and mouse" to prevent anyone from buying it on that assumption.

The result has been zero negative recommendations since before Christmas.

But the game is not an outright success on steam.

To be honest for the game needs sales and exposure. I hope this comment can get you to take another look at the game, or change your recommendation it in a way to help the game. As I'm confident the game would receive a more positive recommendation than you give after list.

Hi Arion, I can appreciate that.

I hope you do give it a chance, and get to experience the improved mouse+kb controls. You played late november, and yeh it wasn't great then. ;)

That said, I wish steam recommendations weren't so black and white, and so incredibly damaging to niche games such as the Falconeer.

But a negative with a note, is a lot better already. Hope it one day can be a positive with some notes ;)

August 5th is another big free update (and big paid DLC), which also once again improves mouse+kb on a few points, perhaps that's a good point to jump in.

Yes it did, but it's a couple months late - it's completely my bad!

I'm glad that the game has improved since I've last played it, but unfortunately, I'm not exactly a huge "controller-based" PC player. I'll definitely give the game a shot again once, or if, the kb and mouse controls have graduated from being experimental.

That said, I'll add a snippet at the top of my review to highlight that the game has greatly improved since my review. Hope that'll help you and the game to reach greater audiences.

However, I'll still keep my Negative Recommendation as I still think the game isn't the right game for me and I don't feel comfortable recommending it as of yet.

That's a shame. A game where you have to aim and shoot is not for keyboard and mouse. I've had this on my wishlist for quite some time. It's not anymore.
