The Asmat are a west Papuan tribe, and a lot of them practiced a form of judicial cannibalism (especially the Korowai and Kombai). Many more practiced headhunting. It’s been a while since I looked into it, but I would hesitate before jumping to conclusions about him being cannibalized. A lot of the tribes in the area were actually open to outsiders to a certain extent.
