A fun, overall well made, and difficult adventure game with a good amount of content, it took me weeks to beat it.

The primary difficulty of course comes from solving puzzles that will bust your brain trying to figure them out for yourself, and yet it's very doable to beat it blind if you keep an open mind and plenty of notes at all times, even when you don't have enough space in-game to keep all your notes. I managed to beat the overwhelming majority of the game blind, with only a small outside hint when I got stuck somewhere and then later on I needed to look up a solution to another puzzle more thoroughly (even though it was something I should have figured out for myself looking back on it), but that was all the outside help I needed, everything else I managed to figure out blind and it was pretty satisfying overall.

There were definitely times that I got frustrated about being stuck for a while though, and I got stuck on quite a few things which became a drag in some parts, so if you don't want to play a game where you'll likely get stuck often and/or you don't want to play a game that requires patience to play it blind then this probably isn't the right game to play, although if you're fine with looking up solutions to puzzles frequently then it's still probably a fun game to play through even with outside help.

That said, this game does set itself apart from the previous game by making the vast majority of its puzzles far less cryptic and obscure. I believe that some people liked the way La Mulana 1 handled its puzzles and don't like the "casualized" sequel quite as much as a result, but I still found La Mulana 2 to be plenty challenging to beat and I wouldn't change much in that regard. I also played through La Mulana 1 as well with its cryptic & obscure puzzles, and even considering I could have played that game more intelligently--mainly I didn't keep my own set of notes for La Mulana 1 which bit me in the ass hard and I regretted that a lot--I still thought (and continue to think) that a lot of the puzzles were overdone in that game.

In particular, the most notable difference with La Mulana 2 is that when you solve a puzzle you see the results immediately in the same room the vast majority of the time, and the very few times where that's not the case then it's a puzzle where it's very obvious what you did and why; this is almost the complete opposite in La Mulana 1 where just pressing a switch could send you to an entirely different area (or even a different zone) to find out what you accomplished. (It's not really so surprising, then, that I had to look up a guide pretty much constantly after a certain point in La Mulana 1, which really killed my enjoyment of the game drastically.)

Considering the difference, I found La Mulana 2 to be a lot more fun (even if still a bit frustrating at times) because of that and I think the developers did a good job toning down the cryptic & obscure puzzles in the sequel while still making it quite challenging. I will admit that I was slightly disappointed that some other puzzle elements and conventions were not retained from La Mulana 1, presumably in order to streamline the sequel a bit more, but that shouldn't really discourage anybody except the most diehard original La Mulana fans, and they probably don't need to read this review anyways.

One criticism that I have of this game (and its predecessor too) is that even though there's a perfectly fine system for keeping various notes and messages in-game, it becomes clear very quickly that there's not nearly enough capacity in-game to keep all the various notes that you need to write down, simply due to the sheer volume of things you need to be able to refer to at any given time. I understand if the limitation is intentional (which I'm pretty sure it is) and I'm not griping about needing to write down some of my own notes at all, but after a point it became a monumental task just to type out notes from in-game to a text file (let alone organize my notes well enough) because of how much there is to keep note of and how long it can take before some of those notes finally become irrelevant. If there was just more capacity for in-game notes to be kept around it would have been less of a problem, and I personally think that there should be at least 2x as much capacity for in-game notes to make it less tedious and annoying to manage the endless amount of notes.

Everything said and done though I thought it was definitely worth ~$20 and I'd definitely like to see more games like this.

The game is incredibly boring because the quests are uninspired, the story isn't that great, and playing through more than 20 character levels I wasn't challenged at all because everything is piss easy. I also tried to like the skill system, but it's pretty generic and boring due to there being so many different heroes.

Maybe the game gets better if you play it for a particularly long time, but I played for around a dozen hours and eventually I just got bored and quit.

I'm just going to be concise and list the reasons why I don't like the game:

-Customization with gun parts is shallow because many parts are either redundant, bad, or just plain useless with other gun parts. For example, there's literally no point in having a different stock for any beam weapon.
-Balance issues are very prevalent, metagame is rigid and boring with skilless & powerful weapons at the top.
-Tech tree grinding is stupid and not fun, if your gun parts aren't as high level as the enemy then you're objectively disadvantaged because you do less damage, fire slower, have less ammo in some cases, etc. Even though the individual bonuses are fairly small, they all add up to improve your weapon greatly despite what people on the forums say, so if you run into somebody with a level 10 weapon and yours is level 1 you're likely screwed.
-Lack of content, the maps and game modes get boring and old and there has only been 1 new map since the game launched at the time of this review.
-Complete lack of any character customization unless you want to pay real cash. If you're lucky you can get a free item as a daily reward but the items you get are limited and they all look stupid. Even though there's an in-game currency to buy plenty of gun parts, you can't use any of it for any other purpose even though some different outfits would be nice.

I could probably go on but I think that's enough. I have a number of hours played, I wanted to like the game because it's a cool concept but it's bogged down by horrible design choices and just general laziness.

It's a fun game that I wish more people would play but unfortunately there are serious connection issues (due to a complete lack of dedicated servers) and a couple things could be balanced a little better, such as the jetpack & rocket launcher.

I really enjoy the game for its awesome customization options but last time I checked the game is dead and even when more people were playing, literally the only game mode I could find any matches for was team deathmatch.
