i'm happy to learn that Doom Eternal Update 1 is available, and apparently removes the odious Denuvo Anti-Cheat kernel module. i've bought the deluxe edition (with 1st-year expansion content) again. it cost more since it wasn't on sale anymore, but i don't care. i just love Doom, what else can i do? but take heed, game studios -- we won't buy even our favorite franchises if they aren't safe, and 3rd-party kernel modules are not cool.

i was enjoying this game until the infamous Denuvo Anti-Cheat malware was forced onto me in a subsequent update. it's absolutely unacceptable to force users to run kernel-level code, especially those of us who will only be playing campaign (and not ranked online/multiplayer). although it's unacceptable there, too, for security reasons. once you allow 3rd-party (non-Microsoft) code to run at kernel level, it's game over -- this "Denuvo" company becomes the weakest link, and if even one of their updates is compromised by an attacker, that attacker will pawn you, bypassing any and all security or anti-virus software you may have installed.

again, i'm very sorry to have to rate Doom Eternal so poorly because i have been a fan of the franchise for oven twenty years and was really enjoying this newest chapter. but unfortunately Bethesda made the unacceptable and shameful choice to place "ranking fidelity" ahead of customerr safety.
