This review is based from the release of the global game on October 26, 2023

I should start by saying Reverse 1999 is a gacha game, which most likely will make it less appealing, but if you still wish to know a full review regardless of this tag, keep reading~

Reverse 1999 sets stage on a world who is currently doomed by a weird phenomenon called "The Storm," which can be described as a chaotic event in which the world goes back in time, while this may not be the perfect explanation, it's enough to have a decent idea of what's the most relevant aspect of the story. As a player, you control a character called Vertin, a girl who most people refer to as "Timekeeper," and have more characters which will be joining you with the pass of time...

This world can be devided by 3 factions, a bureaucratic side, a anarchic one and the middle ground. The bureucratic side is the foundation called St Pavlov Foundation, in which Vertin is part of, the foundation is in charge of searching "The Storm," by trying to studying it in order to solve it. In the other hand there is Mandus Vindictae, a group of anarchics who seek the truth and offers salvation to anyone who seeks for it, and finally, we have the middle ground, which are characters that vary depending on the era...

Depending on the era we have different characters, differents cities, fashions, religions and a great variety of cultures that are full of historic references and rich on lore. Staying on this topic, this game has a lot of lore, focusing in the visual novel aspect of it, having a full voice dub in 3 languages, being English, Chinese and Korean!

Usually, English dubs are weird and sound unnatural, which usually makes a story not appealing, but it's not the case for Reverse 1999, since it's firstly dubbed in English and then it gets dubbed in both Chinese and Korean. This is a huge improvement from other games, that have poor dubs, specially, since this game has different cultures, accents and nationalities, making each character have distinctive accents from each other, making them unique by not only their designs, but also their voices. We also of course, can't forget the visual and musical aspects of the game, which, are ridiciously high in the visual part, having all characters have a 2D model that doesn't feel hollow, trying to convey expressions and body language that perfectly pairs with the musical aspect, which varies a lot, but being always in tune with the story, making it more inmersive. Finally we have the gameplay, which is a turn-based deck card which is not the most revolutionary thing neither the most complex one, but it's very enjoyable and can be difficult depending on the situation, but pairing it with the visuals and musical aspects, it makes it awesome.

Now, to go from a regular player that most likely hate Gacha games, because, as a gacha player myself, have to recognize that gacha games usually are really cancer and predatory... I must say this game can be enjoyed, you can beat all content with basic characters that you get for free, you have the option to grind like a maniac or spent 5 minutes daily, but it may beat the purpose of the game you may be looking for... but nonetheless, I still think you should give it a try, since it's free, it doesn't have many predatory conducts like other games and such.

Now going in the aspects of the game that are bad/need to improve:
- 2D models are great and all, most of them have high details, but the mouth movement are not sync a lot of the time, or straight up don't work properly, which is not obvious at firsts glance, but if you pay enough attention while reading, you'll notice it and you may not be able to not look at it after realizing it.
- Side events don't have dubs, which is not a bad thing, but some dialogues from them have... sounds, which may be a single word, a short phrase or just a grunt, and weirdly enough, an entire speech for one character, which is out of place, since it should stick to either be simple and not dubbed, or be basic and just have basic sounds or be fully dubbed. Having a mix of those 3 is really off putting.
- English is great on this game, as I said, but the subtitles sometimes are in their original language, which is a shame, since some of those dialogues are quite intersting and cute.
- There are events which can't be currently watched again, meaning if you beat them without checking the lore, you'll have to wait until they do a specific update for that event... Okay that's a thing for me, since I skipped a couple events for lack of time and didn't check the lore and now I regret
-Speaking of lore, this game is 70% Visual Novel and 30% gameplay, which depending on the person, can be a deal breaker
