Very good remake. Took me right back to my childhood, but with better graphics and controls. Also, big thanks to Kai Rosenkranz for once again providing perfect music.

The characters are still memorable, and the tone fits the setting really well.

The open world is compact, but truly open. There are little to no arbitrary limits: first of all, no invisible walls; the limits of the world are built into the story. Exploration can pay off big. You can get really good equipment very early on ships anyone?, and it can have that GTA feel where you are able to do stuff you are not supposed to do and even get rewarded for it. Also, the clean user interface is something I wish more games would do. Not having quest markers or even a compass just encourages free exploration.

The one major downside compared to the original is the reactivity of the world. If I knock someone out, the next dialogue with them will be exactly the same as if I had not done that. In the original, there was at least a one-liner referencing that I had just knocked them unconscious.

The dialogue options often do not make sense. This gets more and more noticeable the further you progress. Some examples:
I joined the Old Camp and am a warden, but I can still ask some random digger who the important people in the Old Camp are?
Y'berion just died during the ceremony, but the novices still say the exact same stuff as before and go about their day exactly the same?
I killed Gomez, but there is no one I can tell?

I personally did not like the new lockpicking system, but it gets a lot more bearable if you level it up. Also, I am pretty sure we will get a mod at some point, if it does not exist yet, that reintroduces the old lockpicking system.

The game can also feel a little janky at times, and there are some bugs. Nothing game-breaking or softlocking happened to me, even in permadeath mode where you cannot really load older saves. But for me personally, this only added to the Gothic feel.

Also I feel like the difficulty really dips once you get some halfway decent armor but there already were some balance changes and it really doesn't take away from the overall feel of the game.

Overall, I would give the game a 7.5/10, which could easily be improved to a 9/10 if they improve how NPCs react to your actions.
