Wallace C. Shanangle
Wallace Chamberlain Shanangle
Irondale, Alabama, United States
Well, reckon it's time I shared my tale. Name's Wallace Shanangle, and I'm an 85-year-old feller, born and bred in the heart of the South. Got that southern twang in my words, you betcha.

Back in my younger years, I wore the Navy uniform with pride. Served aboard a ship they called the "Southern Belle." One day, the sky turned dark as molasses, and an enemy bomber came screamin' down from the heavens. We felt her mighty blast rip through our vessel, shatterin' the world around us.

My shipmates, they were my brothers. But in a heartbeat, that plane snatched 'em from me. The sea swallowed 'em up, one by one, as I watched in helpless despair. I had to swim, fightin' the churning waters, pushin' myself toward the distant shore.

Hours felt like a lifetime, but I finally crawled onto that shore, battered and broken, but alive. The memory of that day, the roar of that bomber, and the cries of my comrades still haunt me.

Now, I'm sittin' on this porch, watchin' the sun dip below the Alabama hills. My eyes may be weary, but this old southern twang in my voice, it's a testament to a man who stared death in the face and lived to tell the tale. A survivor with a heart as deep and wide as the Gulf of Mexico.
