Engineer gaming

In all seriousness, this game is fantastic! You drop into a cave system with up to three other dwarves and complete one of seven main objectives (with the option of completing a little side quest for extra XP). A combination of procedural world generation and a large map pool makes each mission feel unique, with its own challenges associated with it. You use the gold and minerals obtained during the missions you've completed to upgrade your weapons and purchase cosmetics, transforming your dwarf into the most fashionable alien killing machine on Hoxxes IV!

Once you've gotten the hang of normal missions (and have played something like 5 hours) you can promote a dwarf and take on the deep dives, which are the true endgame of Deep Rock Galactic. These special missions are three normal missions back to back, each increasing in difficulty. You also have to complete 2 primary objectives instead of just a single primary with a side quest. Your reward for these challenging missions are overclocks, weapon upgrades which range from minor stat increases to complete overhauls of your weapons (you also get hats, victory poses, and beards as well). Unlocking all the overclocks for each dwarf becomes somewhat of an endgame goal which you can easily sink hundreds of hours into (I've played over 200 hours and only just gotten all the weapon overclocks).

The only issue that I've had with this game so far is random crashes, which thankfully have been infrequent. This might just be due to my GPU (RX 5700XT), but it is a little off-putting when you almost finish a mission and the game crashes.

Overall, this is a solid experience that plays a lot like Left for Dead 2 (but you're dwarves and you dig a hole). Pick it up with a few friends and you're sure to have a good time, just make sure your scout doesn't break his legs and your driller doesn't accidentally team kill!

This game is honestly one of the greatest indie gems that has come to Steam in the last few years. I only feel justified reviewing it after playing for over 100 hours. Many a time I have told myself; "I just wanna expand my main bus a little further", or "I've just gotta lay a few more train tracks", and I look at the clock 5 hours later, and wonder where the time went.

The game is a mixture of everything great about logistics and factory building. If you are not interested in spending a large ammout of time optimizing inputs and outputs, as well as reviewing wiki's, then this is not for you.

The primary objective of the game is to mine/extract/refine resources, and then use them to craft items, to craft a mega base, to mine more resources, etc. Your main enemys are the biters (enemy AI which attack you and your buildings and machines when you pollute the enviroment to a certain point), and yourself (if you don't macro manage resources), which impedes your ability to develop your gigafactory. The crafting mechanics are easy to use, even if they are tedious in the early game (this is to encourage the player to automate crafting of all items, as that is more efficient then manually crafting), and the health mechanic is not terribly punishing, but does discourage players from going rambo, and to rely on defensive works for most of the game. Building placement is intuitive, and managing your factory is reletivly easy, until they sprawl over half of the discovered map.

Lets talk about the game world. There is a lot of it, I mean, a lot. It is procedurally generated, so the player never runs out of resources, but it takes a long time to navigate this world (this is a personal gripe of mine, but it shouldn't affect most players). The world itself feeds into the idea of a infinate feedback loop, of which there is no end. This may turn people off this game, but this highlights one of the core features of the game, that of progress for progress's sake. There really is no purpose aside from increasing the size of your factories, as well as researching more technology.

All in all, there is a lot I liked about this game (coming from a guy who enjoys logistics and management), but there are a few issues with it. The soundtrack can use some work. I get that it is supposed to be ambient music, but it falls into a pitfall of repetitive, boring music that really doesn't enhance the play experience. There is a large ammount of walking large distances late game, and one particular resource becomes increadably scarse, and runs out quickly (looking at you, oil!).

All in all, this game is perfect as an idle game, or as a game to spend far to much of a Friday night/morning in, and it has a charming pixilated texture theme that is reminicent of older 64 bit graphics, definatly worth a try and a purchance!
