Evoland Legendary Edition are 2 pretty cool games about the evolution of video games. It starts with a pixelated world and ends in a 3D game, You can travel trough time and use the butterfly effect.

The Legendary Edtion are 2 games in 1, Evoland 1 and 2, They have the same concept but are very different, different stories, different gameplay, same concept, but one is much much better than the other. I do think both are certainly worth playing. It is pretty cool to see how much we take for granted these days.

Evoland 1 is okay, It is very short, Maybe a few hours long, You start out not even being able to move left, If you move to your right you unlock the ability to move to the left, To the left you unlock the ability to move in 4 directions, You need to unlock sounds, enemies, better movement, color, even the ability to save, If you die in the first part you have to restart the whole game. One thing I find especially great is that you can choose to skip certain unlockables, Like the sound chest, If you don't open it, you won't have sounds for the whole game.

I like the references, and the small jokes, But once you feel you get started the game is almost over. It is extremely short, And the story is nothing to write home about. There are a bunch of collectables like stars and cards. You can use these cards in a cardgame that looks a bit like a card game from the Final Fantasy series. The whole game feels a bit like a mix between Zelda and Final Fantasy.

There are a few puzzle based levels that you have to navigate, And the collectables are pretty easy to find, I really like the concept of Evoland, But i really dislike some of the levels, Especially the town, I am glad we don't have a lot of games like that anymore.

Evoland 2 is another story. This game is just amazing. You play as Kuro, You are found by a girl named Fina, You don't seem to remember anything. When you and Fina go out to look for clues where she found you. You encounter a demon and activate a Magilith which takes you to the past. You will even go to the future where you find out a great disaster happened, You are destined to save time itself, In the struggle to prevent the disaster from happening you learn a lot about yourself. Can you correct time to save the world?

They really doubled down on the references, It really goes from Double Dragon, Sonic The Hedgehog, Alien, Mario, Pokemon, Megaman, You name it. Some are not so obvious, you just walk against a thing, take a closer look and then you find out it is Dr Robotniks flying saucer thingy. I also love how the whole game can shift into another game depending on where you are, Most of the game is real time combat, Kill all the enemies, But there are also a lot of xcom like battles, Final Fantasy like battles, I even saw some Guitar hero, Beat em Up and some basic platforming.

You can time travel between The Ancient Times (Game Boy Graphics) The Past (NES 8 Bit Graphics) The Present (SNES 16 Bit Graphics) and The Future (DS Style graphics) You are playing the same world some areas are always accessable But times are changing, It will be filled with different people, sometimes you find people who you meet as a child and as an elderly person. Some areas are only accessable in 1 or 2 times.

Like the first Evoland this one also has a cardgame, I actually like this one, Beating all the npcs to get their cards is quite a challenge. The game also has a nice soundtrack, each inspired by their generation. The Story is full of suprises And the game heavily depends on time travel to progress, You have to change the past to change the future.

You can upgrade your party, your weapons and gear, You gain levels by collecting XP, The game is a blast to explore and complete, Somehow the game does not try to feel funny, It is rather serious, But still it makes me laugh alot, especially the references. The story is great, it looks good, And it surely is an upgrade over the first evoland in every aspect.

If I have to name some bad things, There is no menu, Steam Overlay is not working and it has No full screen option, You can work around this by using your Desktop Fullscreen hotkey, I have set it to Meta + F and this works fine.

Overall the game is solid, Evoland 1 is a fun experience, But Evoland 2 is surely something I would recommend. I have to give Evoland 1 a 7 for its originality, But Evoland 2 surely deserves a 9 for the amazing game it is.

I see, Maybe he decided to just launch Evoland 2 for Linux in the Legendary edition. Sad to see the original Evoland SteamOS icon has been removed. But at least we can play them both natively :)

The first one has a depot, but it is not on the store page nor mentioned at the publisher's web site:

The second one has no depot, it is not on the store page, but the publisher states "to be considered":

I did not know that, I do know this game runs pretty well, I completed the entire game without a crash :)

I did not even think this supported Linux. I stopped paying attention after the removed support from one (or both) of the prior games.
