About Me
I enjoy a wide range of gaming genres. From single player open-world games to flight simulators and everything in-between. However, I usually stay away from competitive or PVP heavy games unless they can somehow be played casually. I like to sit in discord and talk about games just as much as I like playing them. I'm always ready to play something cooperative and welcome invites.

My gaming tastes generally evolve in unpredictable ways but I seem to latch onto a different genre every month or two. So far this year (2024) it's gone like this: Narrative Driven Games -> Hex-Based War Games -> CCGs -> MMOs -> Arma 3 Mission Building.

My Thoughts
Cyberpunk 2077 is both an FPS and an RPG. After releasing prematurely, the game went through about three years of updates and is now an absolute gem. I'm so pleased this game got to have a successful comeback. I can now confidently say it's one of my favorite games.

What I Like:
  • Night City
Night City is such a treat to walk around in that it makes you never want to fast travel. Every street is packed with cozy nooks and hidden alleys begging to be explored. Verticality is applied to great effect here, with multi-layered environments that encourage you to look up and down, not just forward. You feel like just one small citizen in a giant metropolis of millions. There’s even a functioning tram system—if I’m pressed for time, I just hop on the Metro! This game world is incredibly immersive and feels like a living entity (as long as you don’t look too close). Every time I boot it up, the sights and sounds dazzle me and keep me fully engaged.

  • Graphics
This easily gets my vote for best graphics. Nothing even comes close when all the settings are maxed out. High-poly assets, character models, and textures all come together to form a solid package, but the biggest game-changer is the lighting. Ray tracing transforms the world from looking flat to photorealistic. As of Update 2.2, the game now supports DLSS 4. When combined with Path Tracing, the result is nothing short of stunning. The image quality is significantly better with the new DLSS method, and it has almost eliminated any ghosting that was previously there—all with an insignificant performance penalty.

  • Aesthetic
The devs have nailed the Cyberpunk aesthetic. I love all the retro-futuristic cars, weapons, clothing, and everything in between.

  • Sound
Night City is alive with a mix of advertisements, car engines, and street chatter blending into a rich soundscape that fully immerses you. Music, weapon sounds, and ambient effects are all top-notch.

  • Animations
Since the game is mostly first-person, great care was taken to keep you fully immersed with top-notch first-person animations for your hands, body, and weapons. Each time you pick up a new weapon, you’re greeted with a unique animation that showcases its design. There are even multiple reload animations—I haven’t tested all the weapons, but I’ve counted three different reload animations for the ones I’ve used so far. It’s such a small detail, but I really appreciate the effort.

  • Gameplay
There are tons of different ways to play, and all of them have been fun so far. For my first character, I built a "Net Gunner," combining a Cyberdeck with quickhacks (spell-casting) and Smart Gun synergy. It’s incredibly entertaining.

  • Characters
I’ve been loving the cast of characters so far, and seeing Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba in the game has been the icing on the cake.

  • Mods
Pick up Halk Hogan’s texture pack for better high-resolution textures.

What I Dislike:
  • Polish
Despite all the updates, several parts of the game still feel unpolished at times. Some examples:

    • The menus aren't fully displayed in ultrawide resolutions.
    • The first few hours of the main story feel disjointed and confusing.
    • Inventory management is a pain.
    • Sometimes NPCs clip into or walk on top of each other.
    • Their movements when turning are too robotic and lack smoothness.
    • Cars spawn on top of each other.
    • NPCs will honk their horn for no apparent reason indefinitely.
    • NPCs holding objects at unnatural angles.
    • Advertisement textures frequently fail to load.
    • NPC responses don’t always make sense contextually.
    • Characters talk over each other.

There are just a bunch of little things like this that can ruin immersion. And in a game where immersion is already so engrossing, any little thing that pulls you out of it is particularly jarring. Thankfully, these issues are usually hours apart and not in your face constantly.

  • UI
The inventory system is a mess. It takes too long to find what you’re looking for. Some items are sorted by filters, but others aren’t. Your stash doesn’t even have any filters. It takes multiple screens to get to the menu you want. I wish they would overhaul the UI from scratch. I remember The Witcher 3 having menu issues too, so maybe it’s just a CD Projekt Red thing.

  • Dead Game
Development has shifted to The Witcher 4 and a Cyberpunk sequel. I wish they would stick with this title for a few more years of updates. I would love to see more effort put into the world to turn it into an immersive sim like Kingdom Come: Deliverance, but that’s probably just not the game they want to make. Still, I could get lost and live in this world forever.
