"Christmas Came Early- "

Here's The Thing:
You play as one of the most unfortunate child as it takes place sometime around Christmas day. Who wakes up to a note on the chalk board left by his parents(?) telling him to see if there are any presents by the chimney. Lo and behold there is, but there’s also an added reward that will whisk him to… be continued~

[+] PROS;

:) SANTA KILL YOU~
Would make the ideal last-minute gift for someone who’s been bad. Or who’s always wanted to live out a sordid fantasy of being chased by a jolly bearded fellow complete with beer belly, big boots and a giant candy cane to whack some disobedience! It’s a game of cat-and-mouse where you; the dumb-dumb have to either flee Santa’s shady shack on one of two means of transportation or end the man himself with a personalized shot(s) to the face…?

The rush is in making sense of your surroundings as your very first attempt will be one eggnog-filled giant blur. Dying’s part of an established tradition, and so you get two chances each playthrough but Day 2 has its own err dark troubles… Generally, the game works on unspoken elements of strategy where you can cower behind objects tall enough to do the job, tip-toe around the mall santa reject as he patrols… just a few examples!

I still haven’t cleared it, but I was real close too! Could totally picture at least 2-3 hours’ worth of entertainment in getting down the location of where each essential item is stored. Besides there’s a separate hard mode where placements get mixed up, the suit sobers up to really clomp around faster and other more unpleasant memories~

TIPS:
1) The radio spreading Christmas cheer has more purpose than you think!
2) Go to your happy place when your abusive foster father is closing in.

:) STAYING IN THE PRESENT!
I was absolutely feeling the festive spirit, believe it or not- even with the homicidal hobo on the loose. Some classics are being dashed out of a radio… someplace. The man himself also makes you feel at home with a few sound bites that are as old as time.

Snow is really pouring down and they’re like little flecks of happiness! With presents aplenty strewn about, at least two has got to be addressed to you, so hurray! As for the Christmas trees, they could do with a few more touches of ornaments but no judgements. The only thing missing would be proper food as there are some questionable chunks of meat here and there~

:) WHEN THINGS GO SOUTH… POLE
There isn’t so much a story as it is an instant premise that you have to then escape from. But the intent is definitely clear; we could all stand to benefit from not being too consumed with well- consumerism... Being blinded by the positive façade of things. Remember the controversial Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)? Or maybe the Black Christmas (2006) reminder that even nasty shi* can occur around this highly anticipated and supposedly blissful time of the year!?

Now the million-dollar question; is Santa real? Not looking to be a homewrecker or childhood destroyer, what I meant was more of whether the perpetrator in this particular situation could simply be some demented sob cashing in on the pristine reputation of the red-suit for his nefarious deeds. Which begs a legitimate question as well squares away a few things- such as why Santa’s workshop here is actually super depressing and akin to a crack den when you look past the decoration.

So, I wasn’t as disappointed there wasn’t more milk to the platter of cookies, for it left room for imagination and realistic pondering. For instance, how the main kid’s house didn’t go all out either in stringing up lights, which could harbor some subtle hints as to their income status~

[-] CONS;

:( SOCK STUFFED IN THERE…
The game suffers from a fatal audio flaw that spoils all the goodies it had packed for us. At first, I thought it was a result of the in-game radio drowning out everything else but nope! Manually tweaking the volume of my PC to 100, all sounds appear muffled.

Footsteps are so faint that you won’t see santa coming until he’s all up in your face or it’s too late and that cane would already be in mid-swing… From what I understood, the ghost steps is an intentional mechanic but maybe have it only when he's in pursuit? Because if not, it’s more unfair than it needs to be~

:( HO-HO-HORRIBLE!
The controls seem clunky and cluttered, for instance dropping items and interacting with objects all share the same key. So, you will be fumbling for things half the time! Using items is a problem all its own as you have to press your body all up against the, let’s say door and hoping the keyhole registers your reaching for it… I shudder to think what would happen if I were in the middle of a chase~

:( A DISS-EMBER TO REMEMBER~
I didn’t see it as a terrorizing experience, an ordeal yes- but that’s only due to the assortment of bugs. And you know something is up when the horror is solely that of the fear of losing progress, good grief! Springing a santa from out of nowhere isn’t all that frightening… okay maybe it is, but I still think a buffer would have done it better~

BUGS:
x A ton of blind spots where Santa can't molest you but this is a happy bug!
x Phased into the floor, seeing what’s below them…
x Carrying the large objects such as components for the boat will make going through door frames and tight corners a migraine.

NITPICKS:
~ The child’s pint-sized stature should be used more creatively! Like squeezing past the many cramped spaces between objects.
~ Items close together will have their pick-up text splay into each other.

ADDRESSED
x Climbing up ladder has a horrible swaying effect. Easy to get stuck when wanting to do a quick escape!

~ The text “can’t hide with items” shows for other items except when holding keys.
~ The opening sequence should be skipped after the first encounter so that the playthroughs are smoother.
~ A quick restart button would do nicely!
~ Progress should be saved instead of reset altogether if caught during Day 1…
~ Minor irregularity with the "boat room" and "submarine" key. They are both the same thing!
~ Some typos!

Last Words?
Despite unprecedented “gifts”, bugs and taking “Silent Night” way too seriously, there’s hope to be merry. A good ol’ hide-and-seek fun, but very naughty one. Maybe I’m getting soft for the holidays~

If you like a mediocre but packed with potential Christmas Horror spirit, and can still be improved upon- hopefully in time for the actual festivities. If you have a grudge against the Papa Noël, this is a faulty but acceptable way to recant and hold off on asking for a better present~

@janner66 Your words got me thinking back to how people were woke about when Silent Night, Deadly Night first come out, and the way it "desecrated" the holiday...

I mean it's a nice reminder, is all, I don't think it was saying the festivities/event itself was to be blamed! They forget that underneath that suit- there's an actual person.

But yeah, let's hope that they do.

Merry Christmas & happy holidays back at chu~:boozehound::nude::winter2019joyfultearsdog::winter2019angrygingerbread:

I guess turning something seen as wholesome and nice into a nightmare is a classic horror trope, but as you mentioned there is some dark sh*t going on at Xmas in real life.
Thinking about them and hoping the as*holes of this world get their comeuppance.

I always try to play some sort of festive game at Xmas. Maybe not this one though.

Merry Xmas. :retro_beer:

@FruitNDoggie I can think of quite a few other dumb ideas on Steam. This is close, but not one of them.

Not from the way its developers have been fixing things~

Seems like a dumb idea.
