"The Best GLYPH Anyone Could Ask For-!"
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2624182266

Here's The Thing:
You are the eponymous “Glyph” who, through the guidance of a much bigger bug, Anobi have to work together to rebuild the lost, buried-in-the-sand ancient civilization! Once a prosperous, technologically advanced community that quickly got affected by the Cataclysm that corrupted the sand and ability to create life~

[+] PROS;

:) ROLLIN IN THE GREEN~
The gameplay is genius- an adventure platformer where you can’t ever touch the silky-smooth sand otherwise you risk going up in a ball of flames! Fortunately, you’re fitted with the following functions; you get electrostatically-charged upon contact with a surface and store a maximum of two jumps! The ability to glide a short distance both vertically and horizontally. Or the default means of rolling and clinging to just about any surface. Lastly a ground stomp that gives you a vertical jolt!

But the biggest incentive comes in building as well as managing momentum, reining in the realistic physics and knowing when to trigger said abilities. You’ll mostly focus on two game modes. Firstly, “exploration” where you have to navigate ruins and make it your playground! The objective of which is to find secret buttons, collect keys to unlock the warp that goes back to the starting world. There are also coins, golden scarabs to unlock more areas and levels. The other is “time trials” where beating the specific set time tiers can nab you more gems!

If you manage to secure everything the level has to offer- you’re rewarded with skins that are more than palette swaps and trail effects so you can leave quite the impression! With around 80+ levels, totaling up to 25+ hours you’ll have more than sufficient practice and amusement… I’ve just gone through about 30 probably, because I’d never finish in time for the review what with my OCD and losing streak just not having it~

TIPS:
1) Always play it safe! Don’t try to get everything at once for a level.
2) The temptation to “fly” will always be there. But go slow.

:) I AIN’T SCARAB YOU… BRING IT.
Really you should take your time and savor the high of the game. I tell you; this is one of those rare moments where I envy bugs and birds. In the earlier levels, there won’t be much opportunity to spread those wings… Not before long, you won’t even realize how much of it you’ll spend mid-air and it is truly freeing whenever you do. Granted, there will be pitfalls and sudden curveballs to cramp that graceful descent.

The mastery of its mechanics is a pivotal part of the experience and I’m no guru but I think I’ve gotten a darn good handle! Remember those segments where you couldn’t, for the life of you, quite figure out then but now were a breeze? How silly was that!? It takes me back to the classic Crash Bandicoot titles, where you had to stomach the shame and march forward despite knowing of the treats that were barred from your reach~

:) A GEM THAT MORE SHOULD PLAY…!
Do you recall the first time Princess Jasmine went on a magic carpet ride with Aladdin? That’s precisely what I felt whenever the chance to soar over all those structures in shambles presented itself, presumably with many bugs in my face. Although here I am my own carpet and it could end in tragic, fiery remains! You’ll be seeing much of the pristine dunes, under different mood lighting and think how could something so zen be the cause of my infinite demise?

In fact, a lot of the levels have that Egyptian calm, sacred yet scenic atmosphere to them. You just want to curl up in a ball and observe your surroundings or casually roll around like a tumbleweed. Like back in the level select world where you could free roam and never ever slow down, appreciating how far you’ve come! Sometimes you even have your head in the literal clouds and taking flight amidst those puffy, deciduous cotton candies is like being in heaven.

Can we also talk about how much I wanted to keep Anobi, the hint-dropping sage in my pocket and sometimes I bug him just for fun to see him retreat to his shell~

:) WHAT A GOD-SAND!
The music likewise reverberates that mellow, clear and angelic call from above. It helps contribute to a weightless feeling which is ironic because the obstacles always have you self-conscious! Very slow and fragile until it lets out an up-tempo, infectious tune when you collected all the keys and the exit is in plain sight…

That is of course cut short because chances are you’ll also mess up as you are super giddy during this. I couldn’t get pass it, like I was lifted to another dimension through audio alone. The pleasing sound effects of being fully-charged, breaking through the wind or the rhythmic fluttering chirps… Even the mere signal of a jump being executed, reassured me when I thought I wasn’t going to make the leap~

[-] “CONS”;

:( CRUSHED LIKE A-.
Just to put it out there, the difficulty could potentially be off-putting to some. For instance, losing your keys whenever you exploded or the seemingly impossible stretch of desert to zoom past. But it is all actually plausible and in the timing! Though I cannot replicate the exact conditions in which I broke those records- what matters is I did and you will! I admit I too hate to lose, but once I accepted the fact I need not be perfect, I enjoyed it much more~

:( DOES IT NOT BUG YOU?
I appreciated the staging for a plot, and it sounds like a wondrous civilization once resided on this very place. But it is undoubtedly bone dry like its sandy environments. For instance, it is possible to chart a path to and “complete” the final boss battle without there being a meaningful resolution and it just hurls you back and you can replay or do other levels.

Even Anobi’s singular role is just to give you background info you’ll wind up forgetting, as soon as it’s said and throw a less than subtle hint as to where those secrets could lie. But if you don’t mind there being no real plot- which I think is the right mindset to go about it, then you’re gold~

BUGS: GRADE S+
x Snug like a bug!

NITPICKS:
~ The way the guide automatically engages talk bugs me. I rather it be manually prompted.
~ It’s gorgeous but closeup mingling of the camera can let you see past floors, walls and it kills the mood.
~ How about a “photo” mode!?
~ Quicker restart feature.
~ The ending warp/portal backdrop is the same throughout the levels.

Last Words?
A serene 3D platformer like a pupa breaking out of its cocoon. Once it spreads those wings through 80+ levels, becomes a chaotic butterfly with mesmeric cosmetics and hours that frankly just fly by~

If you like the precedent of progression and difficulty set by Crash Bandicoot but mostly airborne along with a “floor is lava” gimmick. If you love to suck a game of its goodies and prove yourself while feeling freer than an avian… Do both you and your inner neurotic a favor by taking Glyph out on a test flight~

5 / 5

My heart goes out to Bolverk Games for the key! Apologies for the delay~

@Two Clicks Hahah! Hence my putting them as "cons". They were more of a preferences thing that didn't really affect the gameplay performance.

And yes, I believe that it did fly, glide and landed well out of reach. Which I touched on, it's just maybe too difficult for the everyday gamer. But good thing I approached it on a casual level!

Thank you for stopping by~

I doubt this game is very good but none of the cons bought down the score? Looks like one of those games that can fly under the radar. Thanks for reviewing.

@FruitNDoggie Well this sand is even more so~

It's a magical macguffin that just is~~

How do you corrupt sand? It's already rather hostile to life.

@AviaRa ...interesting! Whatever are they? Now I wanna know hahaha~ Lifeslide wouldn't be one of them, would it? :cleachaos:

Sounds fun to me. I still have bunch of similar games in my library that I haven't touched, so this one will have to wait.

@garnetofeden Perfectly reasonable assessment : ) : D

Take all the time you need~

It looks beautiful, but it sounds like it has a lot of the gameplay aspects that I find more frustrating than satisfying, so I'll have to give this one some thought.

@janner66 You're absolutely right- it feels liberating but at the same time, trapped. Because one could slip up and not seem able to emulate that progress again.

HAHAHA I totally get that ledge thing. But ultimately I found a way around them.

Thank you, THANK YOU!! :UDG_Heart::UDG_Surprise:

I'm glad you enjoyed it too. There are so many highs and lows in this game with risk vs reward always in your mind. You do feel like a bad ass when you jump, fly and then hit that unbelievably small bit of land, that you thought you could never reach.

Jumping up walls with ledges at the top was my least favourite activity in this game. Why were the devs so evil?

I am impressed with your punnage once again. Great review.
