A lot of people don't remember Bush for his compassion, but it's true he ran for president as a compassionate conservative. A good example of his compassion was an incident shortly after the invasion of Iraq. Donald Rumsfeld, the secretary of defense, met with the president to inform him of some coalition casualties. "Mr. President, I regret to inform you of the deaths of three Brazilian service members." Bush was noticeably disturbed by this news. He put his head in his hands and began softly sobbing. He was visibly shaken. Rumsfeld reached out in an attempt to comfort the president. Finally, Bush regained his composure, turned to Rumsfeld, and asked "Just how many is three Brazilian exactly?"
