Max was born into a racing family: his father, Jos Verstappen , is a former Formula One driver, and his mother, Sophie Kumpen , competed successfully at the highest levels of karting.

In 2015, at the age of 17 years and 166 days, Verstappen made his Formula One debut for Scuderia Toro Rosso, becoming the youngest driver to start a World Championship race.
