I kind of stopped caring about the skills and ended up using the awakening items on the ones I really wanted.
The combat isn't as refined as DS, and the fact that you're incentivized to not level because you will stop mastering your skills if you're too high level left me feeling like all of my 'souls' were worthless. It's a bad feeling beating a boss and not seeing any of your skills rank up because of that. I got the DLC on sale, but after beating the game I'm not feeling any hurry to go back to it.
There were some really fun parts to it in exploring though. I think the last area before the final boss and the first area I went to (Howling Pit) were my favorite locations to wander and learn the layouts for.
