This game is not worth its current price to the vast majority of the MK fanbase.

Mortal Kombat has forever been THE casual fighting game, huge playerbase, massive appeal, etc. I find it quite puzzling since the game isn't necessarily easy or "dumbed down" like a lot of japanese FGs are trying to do to bring in the casual crowd, its the average MK experience with some characters requiring quite a bit of execution - Kenshi comes to mind for example - yet even then it wasn't just the mechanics that brought in the casual crowd, it was the single-player content MK was known for. A vast campaign, a somewhat decent plot, some kind of single-player enjoyable content like The Krypt, Test Your Might, the fatalities, the unlockable character customization, and so on.

This entry in the series though while it does live up in expectations for a good fighting game, hell it might even be the best systems MK has ever had, it does not provide quality single-player content to warrant a purchase from the vast majority of the fanbase.

After the grandiose success of SF6 and its reinventing of the FG single-player experience, MK1 simply fails to provide even a smidgeon of content when compared to Capcom's masterpiece, and while it does have deep and engaging systems for players who ARE interested in the "fighting" aspect, the character customization and single-player content has very little enjoyment to be had for the average buyer.

Invasions are a weak replacement for The Krypt, they're incredibly slow and uninteresting to progress through and feel tacked on amidst a game begging for real content. It has a ton of unnecesary fights and really annoying "effects" during the fights that make them incredibly annoying to do. Especially the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slow effect, that one sucks.

The multiplayer also has its issues, the ranking system is very barebones and doesn't have a per-character rank so you're always scared of trying new things, the connection to the servers too was very poor during launch, but that has since been fixed. Lobbies have also not returned, which makes the experience of playing against friends inherently frustrating since everyone just has to matchmake each other through the friend list.

Overall the multiplayer aspect of the game is incredibly outdated even when compared to older titles like Skullgirls, Tekken 7 or even MK11!

With all that said tho, I do recommend it. Even with all of these issues I've still been massively enjoying it, I feel like my money was well spent because the GAME part of the game is incredible, I love fighting games and this one is no exception. Maybe I'm biased since MK has never dumbed down its mechanics, but everytime I play it I just have fun. The characters, the kombos, the kameo system, everything related to the FIGHTING aspect is just fantastic. The balancing of characters and assists is the best NRS has ever had (not as good as SF6 but better than NRS's previous titles) and the visuals and animations have greatly improved.

I've never been a fan of MK so this lack of content doesn't affect me in the slightest, all I wanted was a good fighting game and I got it. If however you're looking for single-player "kontent" like in SF6, or even like in previous entries to the series you might be sorely disappointed. I, however, really really like it.

The game is now at the state it should have been at release. A shame it took almost a full year to make the game worth buying, and I still think the end-game could use some work.
Aside from that however, the recent updates have proven that Fatshark is willing to develop the game from a mediocre to a someday-great experience. So stay tuned!
