History of The Fedora

A fedora is a felt hat with a wide brim, an indented crown and a ribbon. They come in many colours, but black and tan are the most common.

The first appearance of the fedora was in 1882 in a play named “Fédora” in which one of the main characters, Princess Fédora Romanoff, wore a hat that resembles the modern day fedora. This started the popular fashion choice for many women, especially women's rights activits. It wasn't until 1924 when Prince Edward started wearing them that they became popular around men, replacing hats such as top hats and bowlers.

Fedoras were most popular during the mid 1920's, and thus is why they are often linked to gangsters. Starting in the 1940's, noir films (Hollywood crime dramas) often used fedoras, boosting their popularity. With the introduction of casual clothes, however, fedoras unfortunately disappeared in to the pit of lost fashion. They did return later, especially during the 1970's onwards.

Although fedoras have gone in and out of fashion, they will always be the best and most stylish hats out there, and will always hold a place in our hearts.
