Watch movies on SteamOS

Hey! Is there any way to watch a movie from a usb on SteamOS? If there isn't, it would be cool if you could since the os is designed for tvs, and tvs are designed for movies and stuff.

Well I got to installing vlc media player, downloaded all the packages and things, but in the end it failed or something, can't remember the error it got. I'll try install vlc media player again on friday, see if it works then.

Install libdvdread4 and libdvdnav4 and you'll be able to watch dvds with vlc, otherwise it won't work.

They install automatically when you install vlc from terminal
sudo apt-get install vlc

Install your favourite movie player (VLC, XBMC or mplayer) in desktop mode and add the movie player as a non-steam game to your steam library.

You don't need to have add it as a non-steam game, only if you want the entire universe to see when you have the video player open.

I suggest XBMC if you (like me) want to control everything from an XBOX 360 controller.

xboxdrv could be used for steam client (not bpm) and/or any app...

If you mean for starting the video player without using keyboard & mouse, you still need to use it anyway for navigating through the video player in the first place, because you will not be able to navigate through it with a controller since it's a desktop app.

simply rmmod xpad and load the necessary modules for xboxdrv then launching xboxdrv with a rudimentary config or command gives mouse look for navigation using controller. I prefer this to steamos blue circle "touchpad" optimisation for steam controller especially when navigating web pages in the browser from bpm. The same rudimentary launch options/config for xboxdrv will easily allow use of controller for navigating and opening files using vlc or any other desktop app though in steam@steamos due to optimisations for gaming the apps do behave in an unexpected manner.

i guess folks who are using desktop mode in steamos will almost certainly have a keyboard and mouse connected to their steam machine as will most folks troubleshooting to get sound or wifi etc working as expected in steamos

So I managed to get VLC player installed and working, tried playing a movie from USB, it worked but there were a few problems. The video wasn't too good quality, it was pretty not good quality lol, and the audio at certain points was really weird and things. Hope Valve create their own video app that runs natively on big screen mode that can load movies from a usb, would be cool!
