Looking to install a .mkv-capable media player
Does anyone have any recommendations and some linux-newbie-friendly instructions on how I can install a media player to play .mkv videos on my SteamOS steambox?

SteamOS custom installer VaporOS installs both Kodi and VLC which are media players capable of playing .mkv's. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/vaporos
You could install VLC or XBMC to your current install. Simply install VLC after adding wheezy or jessie repositories to sources list and Kodi aka XBMC has its own steamos repository.

.mkv's are just containers, they can contain all kinds of videos. Thought you can just try VLC or something for gnome. i recommend VLC

If you don't want to re-install SteamOS, checkout my github repo. In a terminal window:

sudo apt-get install git
git clone https://github.com/ProfessorKaos64/SteamOS-Tools
cd SteamOS-Tools
./add-debian-repos.sh
./desktop-software.sh install vlc
./desktop-software.sh install kodi

Xaero mentioned something about libbdplus [www.videolan.org] in another post a while back. Unfortunately I haven´t had time to check it out, in Germany right now. Not sure if it´s any better than libbluray1 or if it´s used in conjuction with libbluray1 or what

Is that safe?

I would not advise adding Jessie packages. It is too messy right now. I have a testing branch for that, and it does not mix well with what Valve keeps in their repo.
