Simple question :)

simple answer; yes
TUCKER2k4 Aug 21, 2014 @ 4:01am
More compicated, but accurate answer: Sorta.

i5-3350p
Asrock B75 Pro3-M
Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB 1600MHz CL9 1.5v
R9 270x
Samsung 840 Evo

Now would this work ?

Everything seems fine, but ya never know till you try it. I have an AMD HD5770 and I couldn't get it to work right. I'd recommend trying it out and going from there :)

Compatible? Yes.
Problem free? No.

If you already have an AMD GPU (and not an ancient one) give it a try, you might get lucky with certain games.

But if you deciding now what GPU to buy, go with Nvidia.

alright, thanks. I just checked their Website. I guess they released proper drivers for AMD GPUs now

The only officialy supported hardware for steamos is the hardware found in the lucky three hundred prototypes and the 1200+ Brix's. None of which use AMD hardware AFAIK.

AMD linux drivers are the problem not necessarily the hardware.

Official documentation mentions any AMD gpu from HD5000 and up is supported.

I'd love to hear some tips from AMD GPU users. The R9 270x is relatively new so I think it would be fine. so does anoyone have any first-hand experience ?

Would the Pentium G3256 ( The new anniversary edition unlocked penitum ) paired with the R7 260x / GTX 750 work ?

To be honest try and see is best advice as [IDST] TUCKER2k4 suggests.

SteamOS is beta. Running steam for linux client in any desktop environment (including desktop@steamos or steam@steamos in gnome-session) gives far greater gaming performance in comparison to steam@steamos BPM.

The biggest thing holding back steamos/steam for linux is the choice of titles in store. i.e. problem is not supported hardware

Interesting, I'm seeing the exact opposite. It used to be true once (especially when I had an AMD GPU) but now (after they tweaked the BPM to stop using resource while gaming) I have at least the same performance as in Gnome-sessions, if not slightly better.

To be honest i stopped using my steammachine due to lack of titles....

Windows for me means all the steam client features and i can play all my games. I see steamos as nothing more than a way to boot, load and run steam for linux client.

Considering people are still posting all the same issues as eight months ago it is good to hear some improvements have been made to steamcompmgr at last which is a steamos improvement and not just a client tweak.

The way Valve handled the beta machine thing, making the gui for keyborad and mouse emulation proprietary software and not turning up at gamescom 2014 as well as all the "meh" press/media responses to steammachine project has ebbed away my enthusiasm for steammachines. I do not want to make my pc a quasi console.

I can not help drawing comparisons with nvidias's shield features and AMDs's raptr projects with steamos. The only thing missing from these services is digital distribution which is the main incentive for most folks to use Steam in first place.

Do not want to totally derail IBMs's thread

SteamOS is compatible with AMD GPU's from the HD 5000 series and newer. Issue is that the AMD drivers aren't very good and you won't get a decent, sustained framerate in any game at the moment.

Newer just means newer bugs from my experience with GPUs. but yes, faster, I agree. I have an R9 280X I just bought and was planning to install over my steamOS with Win 8.1, but I might put a hold on that and let you know how it works.

Also, reference this if you also have on board graphics card...
