Not getting HDMI output after the update. No sound or video after seeing a mouse cursor temporarily. System appears to boot as normal otherwise as I was able to log into my Steam account. Booting from the 4.16 kernel works fine (video & audio work as expected). NVIDIA GTX 960, Alienware Steam machine R2.

Last update (2.186-2.190)happened on my system. I had to do a clean install.

Now I'm getting a blank screen on the previous kernels as well... system logs are complaining about modules nvidia-current, nvidia-current-modeset, nvidia-current-drm not found

FYI, I tried the steam link app on my tablet and I get a blank screen there, too. Hi ho.

If you can log in, what does "dkms status" tell you?
buckysrevenge Jun 27, 2019 @ 8:27am
Yeah, I can log in (e.g., Ctrl+alt+f2). sudo dkms status states:
fglrx, 15.9: added
Error! Could not locate dkms.conf file.
File: does not exist

Well that's not fantastic. Sounds like the dkms conf file for a kernel module is missing - the following command should list a couple of entries like so:

find /var/lib/dkms/ -name source

/var/lib/dkms/broadcom-sta/6.30.223.271/source
/var/lib/dkms/nvidia-current/415.27/source

What do you have there? Also does your machine actually have fglrx supported hardware in it?

I'm busy right now, so I'll check the sources later, and no, I have no fglrx hardware, Intel CPU, Nvidia video as stated above
vivek Jun 27, 2019 @ 10:59am
Ok. well I'd start by removing the fglrx package and dkms module, and installing the nvidia-driver
package, which should pull in everything you need. If it installs successfully (will take a while, needs to build the nvidia kernel module) then you'll need to reboot to actually get the new driver loaded.

Thanks, I'll give it a try later

The find command found flgrx/15.9, nvidia-current/415.27, & nvidia-current/3**.**.** (don't remember the exact version number, but it was old).

I tried to install nvidia-driver but it said it was already installed, 'apt-get --reinstall' put out a few lines like it was trying to do something, but it really didn't. I'll try removing it first next time I get a chance (Incidentally, flgrx-driver wasn't installed, or at least running 'apt-get remove' claimed it wasn't).

Well, the fglrx directory you found there indicates some cruft at least. You should probably remove it for tidiness. Then run dkms status and
see if it's any happier.

I used dkms to remove the fglrx and the nvidia-current modules, then I built and installed the nvidia-current module which seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks so much vivek!

No problem. Interested in figuring out how it got into that state but the importantthing is it's working.
buckysrevenge Jun 28, 2019 @ 8:33am
I found some post online that mentioned a random off-chance that a module not being rebuilt properly after a kernel update, so I guessed something similar happened since dkms stated the module was there but the logs stated they couldn't find it.

Yes, glad everything's working again and I learned some things along the way too. \o/

Thanks for the update. I have encountered no problems, and I also have a Alienware Steam machine R2 like buckysrevenge.
