FAR (Fix Automata Resolution)
Special K[wiki.special-k.info] features NieR: Automata specific tweaks and features (collectively known as FAR) created by Kaldaien with contributions from various individuals. For years these tweaks were essential to fix various issues the Steam version of the game suffered from, and many of these features and fixes made their way into the game officially following an update to the game released by Square Enix on July 15, 2021.

With the current state of the game Special K is no longer as essential though it still features improvements to the latest version of the game that some may find beneficial:
  • Enables much faster loading times.
  • Can improve the frame pacing of the game and eliminate micro stuttering.
  • Decrease the global illumination below that of the lowest setting of the game for a major performance improvement.
  • As well as various other minor fixes and features that improves the overall rendering pipeline and latency, such as Nvidia Reflex integration.

For updated information please see the Special K wiki:
https://wiki.special-k.info/SpecialK/Custom/FAR

Uninstall outdated versions of FAR

The legacy version of FAR (v 0.7.0.23) is not compatible with the new updated Steam version, and the game will fail to launch if left in the game folder. The files related to FAR needs to be removed manually from the game folder, so please remove them from the game folder. This is most easily done by removing any and all files that is not shown in the below image.

  • This is how a fully cleaned out folder looks like after the game has been launched once:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2559265741
  • If the game has not been launched yet another executable along with some batch files will also exist in the folder.

  • Only GOTY owners have the Wallpaper folder.

  • Validating game files or uninstalling/reinstalling the game through Steam will not remove third-party files, such as FAR, from the game folder.

These are the files and folders related to older versions of FAR:
Name
Type
Comment
dinput8
Files
Remove any file with dinput8 in its name. These are the main components of FAR.
FAR.ini
File
Holds NieR: Automata tweaks config.
d3d11_shaders.ini
File
Holds outdated shader config for the outdated custom ReShade of FAR.
Version
Folder
Holds non-functioning auto-updater version data.
logs
Folder
Holds FAR diagnostics logs.
ReShade
File/Folder
Any file or folder with ReShade in its name is related to FAR's outdated custom version of ReShade.

The Steam client can if you use the Steam version of Special K instead of this version.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/1157970/discussions/2/2270319347580265040

Request a beta key there and then use that instead.

I used Skif (thx again for the key) and when I start the global injection, the 32 bit version works but not the 64 bit version (it says that specialk64.dll is missing) https://i.imgur.com/WIpO7DY.png , but I have a 64 bit system, Automata starts well but without apparent change, which is not surprising because if I understand correctly the modifications for Automata goes through specialk64.dll https://i.imgur.com/mAGOw2S.png

That suggests anti-virus software is being a nuisance. I don't use anti-virus because it randomly breaks things without telling the user, so I'm not going to be any help diagnosing this :-\

I disabled my antivirus to test and it still does not work, I have no quarantined files, I looked in the Special K folder and I found the two DLLs SpecialK64 and SpecialK32 so I dont understand why he doesn't want to settle Special k

Dude follow this guide to the letter. https://www.nexusmods.com/nierautomata/mods/29 - There is optional stuff but at least do the FAR SETUP. Download his preparation files and FAR

For this guide we are using the SKIM64 installer to install the FAR Mod and then overwriting using v7.0.20 files --- As this is the most recent one I've found to work with "Bande Desinee / 3DMigoto" + "NieR Automata - HD Texture Pack"

Download the Main File.
Extract "SKIM64.exe" anywhere (downloads folder is ok).
Right-click, properties, "unblock" (lower-right hand corner).
Double-click on SKIM64.exe, Select a Product (drop-down menu): "FAR" (Fix Automata Res.), INSTALL.
Let it install and when it finishes, close out of the window.
‏‏‎
DELETE THESE FILES:
— "ReShade" folder (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "ReShade64.dll" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "ReShade64.ini" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "ReShade64_SpecialK64.pdb" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "d3d11_shaders.ini" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
‏‏‎
NOW Download FAR v 7.0.20.
Extract ONLY these (3) files: "dinput8.dll", "dinput8.pdb", and "CEGUI (folder)" into your NierAutomata game directory.
Replace All.
Open the file "default_dinput8.ini".
— Navigate to the [Render.DXGI] section and ensure "Use64BitDepthStencil=false
— Navigate to the [Textures.D3D11] section and ensure "Inject=true".
‏‏‎
NOW Download "Base Admin Files" under the FILES TAB, in the Main files section.
— Extract the contents into your %USERPROFILE%\documents folder (This is the folder with the Administrative FAR files & ReShade files inside. FAR will read from the "My Mods" folder.)
— Replace All.
— Go into this file: My Mods\SpecialK\PlugIns\ThirdParty\ReShade\ReShade.ini
— Replace: "CurrentPresetPath", "EffectSearchPath", and "TextureSearchPaths" to the correct paths (FOR YOUR SYSTEM)
— Go into this file: NieRAutomata\dinput8.ini
— Scroll down to the very bottom and ADD this section at the end:
[Import.ReShade64]
Architecture=x64
Role=ThirdParty
When=PlugIn
;Filename=THIS POINTS TO YOUR MY MODS FOLDER (Wherever that is, for you).
Filename=%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Mods\SpecialK\PlugIns\ThirdParty\ReShade\ReShade64.dll
‏‏‎
Go into your Taskbar notifications section, and find an icon that looks like a snowflake (SKIM);
— If you do NOT see it - You may skip this step.
— if you DO see it - Right-click it and Deselect "start with windows" and (if it is available) select "stop".
‏‏‎
START THE GAME ONCE. It should work correctly.
‏‏‎
If the game does NOT start correctly ----- DELETE these files:
— "NieR Automata" folder in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games
— "Versions" folder (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "dinput8.ini" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "FAR.ini" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
‏‏‎
DELETE these files too (if you have them) AND TRY TO START THE GAME AGAIN:
— "ReShade" folder (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "ReShade64.dll" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "ReShade64.ini" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "ReShade64_SpecialK64.pdb" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
— "d3d11_shaders.ini" (in your NieRAutomata game directory)
‏‏‎
If the game DOES start correctly ----- You have successfully installed FAR.
— While in-game, Press "CTRL" + "SHIFT" + "BACKSPACE" to open the FAR Menu.
— Click on the "UPDATE" tab, and select "Never" for when to update.
— Now EXIT the game.

:shodan: Night and day difference with all the optional stuff like upscaled videos :shodan:
The saturation is a little high in those screenshots. And I've just noticed that somebody modded Wheatley into Nier Automata...

In the nexus mod link. There are some screenshots. I assume to show off reshade.

Oh, well there's your problem right there :P 99% of usages of ReShade are to oversaturate things, it's why I don't really use it often. People seem to like oversaturated images, so I support ReShade where possible, just don't see many practical applications for it.

ppl either oversaturate, crush the shit out of the blacks, or oversharpen

Nearly always looks like cancer and yet people recommend as "improvements".

I followed the guide to the letter but when it is time to install Far with Skim, same problem: "something went wrong attempting to download installer dll"
@Kaldaien - I hate that you're banned... likely due to some stupid Valve decision-making... I would LOVE to support your Special K beta in testing atleast, if that's something you'd allow me to do (with a beta key or something) :)

Personally use ReShade to fix certain looks such as washed-out colors and generally color-related personal triggers of mine (I use some custom LUTs for certain games to correct the overall tone of the game's colors back to a neutral state).

ALSO - For those who use my guide referenced here, I haven't made the change to download v 7.0.14 (yet), but since it seems it is recommended to use that version instead of the latest version I should take a look at doing so sometime soon. I'm always down for improvements to that guide --- expect to see future guides using that guide as a BASE TEMPLATE.

EDIT: I have updated the guide to use v7.0.14 of FAR (Thanks to Aemony's suggestion I read somewhere.)

Why was he banned? Also I should mention that the flip model enabled version of far removed all of my stuttering. You can still cause v7.0.14 to stutter by swapping to either windowed mode or fullscreen(whether if you're alt tabbing or not). So be careful. Try not to alt tab or switch to windowed mode if you are not near someplace to save.

Trolls report him constantly, and mods are idiots, and because of the # of times hes been banned now, he got automatically a year ban.
