Steaming with host monitor Off = 1024x768
Whenever I start to stream a game on my Macbook from my Windows PC upstairs, if the PC monitor is either off, or is in power saving mode my stream starts in a resolution of 1024x768. Changing resolution in game has zero effect. I presume this is happening as Windows thinks there is no monitor attached, and cannot set a resolution properly.

Is there a solution for this? It seems strange that if I want to stream a game I first have to go upstairs, turn the monitor on, waggle the mouse a bit and leave the monitor on (for who?).

I bought an HDMI dummy on Ebay for that purpose. Letting the host pc think a monitor is attached.

This does't happen to me. I stream at 1920*1200 with my monitor off.

It did not use to happen to me using Windows 8.1. Now that my pc(host) is running Windows 10 I have this issue.

Windows 10? I have all sorts of annoying issues that are pissing me the hell off with multiple monitors in Windows 10.

If I turn off any of my monitors or my A/V receiver (which is hooked up through DisplayPort -> HDMI), Windows freaks the hell out and resizes the desktop according to whatever remaining displays are turned on.

I cannot figure out a good solution to this problem, it's driving me nuts. I don't like leaving every freaking monitor in my home theater room on all the time, but Windows 10 doesn't want to work properly unless I do that.

The only solution I've found, and this is a stupid one at best, is to engage each display device's power saving mode: "Display Off". The display device stays on, but the panel isn't powered. It saves electricity, but I'll be damned if I didn't have to leave them on constantly in Windows 8.1 :-\

The solution/workaround is to configure the in-home streaming client advanced settings to: 'Limit the resolution to 1920x1080'

You will then be able to stream games at resolutions up to 1080p when the host monitor is turned off or not connected.

in gpu control panel, create the custom res of 1920x1080, or 1280x720
then in steam -> settings -> remote play -> advanced host options
tick 'change res to match client'

I am actively having this problem right now in 2025... It works when I login with teamviewer and stream via steam at the same time. Though this is (for obvious bandwidth reasons) far from ideal.
