Spotted this one on Steam that's not on the list. Hybrid style, the dungeon crawler aspect is pretty barebones it seems but it has an interesting mix of freelook + cell-based movement. https://store.steampowered.com/app/426050/LEGIE

Just discovered this group and I am an avid Bard Tale Trilogy fan, both the orignals, and the remastered versions. Playing the remaster has shown me that I probably would not have the same, grind mind-set that I had as a kid when I was never happier than when I was checking off each map square on my graph paper. However, the remaster's quality of life changes really mean I can get that old pleasure, without some of the frustration. I was curious if anyone knows if the SSI Ad&D games, such as Pools of Radiance, will get a remaster? Or is there a indie project to do so?
Stryker Jul 8, 2022 @ 9:54am
I don't think that slipped under anyone's radar. Definitely slipped over the radar because of that stupid price.
UncleYar Jul 7, 2022 @ 11:36pm
Looks like another Wizardry-style game that slipped our radar https://store.steampowered.com/app/1570510/Undernauts_Labyrinth_of_Yomi/

I was like "Oh sweet, a game I've never even heard of- oh great... another one of those "artsy" style games with a visual gimmick."

At least it's not as bad as that one game that was all red.

Frame rate can mean so much in so many games. Sometimes it's true, the higher the better - I've played Polybius on PSVR at 120fps and that's smoother than silk, I love it. But frame rate really means nothing to that Wizardry game because it's entirely turn based, menu based, and almost entirely still images. The only significant animation other than maze movement is that your characters blink. There are barely any battle animations - it's all still images. Attacks are a flash of bloom. A strike wobbles a sprite. The game could be ported to spreadsheet and the core game would still be there unaffected. That doesn't mean it's a bad game, it just means the game was never aiming for cutting-edge, and frame rate isn't hugely relevant.
Stryker Jan 30, 2020 @ 10:48am
Let's not pretend that it wouldn't affect battle animations and menu navigation too.
tenshi_a Jan 30, 2020 @ 4:07am
That game has hardly any moving parts. Does anyone really want smoother movement animation from one square to the next so hard that they wouldn't buy the game?
Wicca-san Jan 15, 2020 @ 7:07pm
Sometimes if the port is that old the technical limitations or the coding preclude the ability to change FPS. Or they might have tested it and it might have looked like it was moving way too fast.
Stryker Jan 15, 2020 @ 3:43pm
Yes, but why port to PC if you're not going to improve it? It's 2020, games should not be locked at 30 FPS on PC ever.
Wicca-san Jan 15, 2020 @ 3:21pm
Wasn't the original?
Stryker Jan 15, 2020 @ 3:14pm
Wizardry is locked at 30 FPS, for those who care.

I hope folks are doing well this holiday season. I'm visiting family so it's console time of year. Just FYI: both Bard's Tale original trilogy and Operencia are on Xbox Game Pass right now and there are some special deals that make the subscription very inexpensive indeed.

Bard's Tale IV has added grid-based movement and officially become worthy of this group! https://store.steampowered.com/app/566090/The_Bards_Tale_IV_Barrows_Deep/

Movement system is still in beta, good time to give them feedback I guess. I gave it a quick try, and in the free-look mode you can move diagonally between tiles if in an open space, which is pretty interesting for a gridder.
