Down the nostalgia path, anyone remembers StarLancer?
I was curious if anyone remembers it. For me it was the swan song of the space sim era, the last of the greats, and it seems very underappreciated. Poeple remember and praise FreeSpace, Tie Fighter, Privateer, Wing commander but nobody seems to remember this gem

It was for me truly the pinnacle of the space sims. Each mission was varied, with very different objectives, it was never a question of just shooting everything up.Really the missions were amazingly crafted.. The story was cliche but superbly done and even now rewatchign the intro on youtube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfJxAo_LC9M ) i want to jump into my fighter and defend the alliance:). The lore was superb, with squadron histories that you coudl read about, from what i remmember even your squadron history changed as you progreessed, according to what you achieved. IT had even a light strategic element as you unlocked ships thanks to rank and choosed yout loadout.

So good. I have this hope Squadron 42 will achieve or maybe even surpass this greatness.

My only complaint about this game was the ending and the final level.

Also hard difficulty was completely garbage.

Hmm i catn remeber the ending. What do you mean hard wasw garbage? I cant remember at which i played, but the game from my memory was overall pretty hard.

On hard difficulty all enemy fighters become so resistance to your weapons fire that it takes a minute of sustained fire to kill them (and that's before you factor in weapons overheating).

The final level sucks because you have to pick the ship that can cloak or the mission is unwinnable. The ion cannon is simply too OP.

The ending sucks not because the ending itself but rather that the ending is retconned by freelancer.

Maybe its the wing commander thing, Star LAncer was for sure feeling liek a natural continuation.

For all of my love for TIe Fighter i felt StarLancer had much more interesting even surprising missions

Ahh now that you wrote about it i remeber that Ion cannon . It was mad:). Fromw hat i remember i used i thinka cloaking wessel there, to cloak when it loaded up. IT was still crazy the stress, i think it was was one shot one kill...

IT IS a one shot kill. Oh and after you beat that section, you have to escort ships with your pitiful arsenal of guns (since the cloak ship isn't really well armed). Hope you're really good with screamer missiles.

What I loved the most of Starlancer was how cinematic it was and how they tried really hard (and generally succeeded) to have a great and engaging missions and story.
