I actually find this quite troublesome. Considering how things went down with Barter, I feel like its successor shouldn't be yet another closed source single-person project. Lestrade's might be a good temporary successor, but a true Barter successor should be free/open software, and community developed and maintained. At a minimum, the source code should be open and available for pull requests.
A federation-based trading system would be even cooler, where anyone could install the trading website software, and they could all talk with each other. Would be a lot harder to pull off though, but trades could be verified and honored through a block-chain system. That's all the rage these days anyway, isn't it?
I'm not saying Lestrade's could never be the replacement for barter. But I think it's problematic (to say the least) to just move from one closed-source personal project to another one.
so I wouldnt know
so people wont have to go thro all 8 pages of comments...
lol, how to save a Browser-Cookie which becomes invalid?
I can say that I could complete the most fair trades with barter.
All the more I feel sorry for my little opponents that such a well thought-out project degenerates into a dead soul.
It inspires me all the more to invest time to create such a project.
Getting started with the API are already done with my little Shop of 1300 Games for pseudo currency.
But I hope more that "Barter" comes back.
At this point I would also like to be with no one enemy.
Our common faith is meant to strengthen us.
Sorry for my english!
Very nicely done! You are even getting a decent amount of responses it seems (one even asked when an IG bundle would be added ;))!
I'm not 100% sure this was the best topic to link to, though... It's long and complicated to read. It might have been best to create a specific topic to link to, with a quick explanation of the various problems at Barter and why it's dying, and then a link to Lestrade's Steam group for instance. (Which you can find on my profile for instance.)
Also, I wasn't in a hurry to 'advertise' the site. ;) As long as it doesn't have a trading system, it simply forces people to wait until it's there. And it's not ready yet. (I really lost a LOT of time on the offer creation page, wanting to get it to look close to what Barter offers... Always changing some details to make it look and behave better, and then going back because it didn't feel Bartery enough... Ahhhh, the joys of website birthing!)
Please, please don't compare me to Barter.
- First of all, Barter was run by an anonymous user, who did his best to hide his real identity. Mine is everywhere, I've never tried to hide who am I (not that anyone cares who I am, but at least they can find out), so you can easily get in touch with me on Facebook (given my unusual name I'm very easy to find), Github or whatever you fancy. Even e-mail. Or my dozen other websites. The admin chose to disappear overnight. We still don't know if he passed away or simply decided he wanted to sever his ties with that site out of paranoia or boredom. I'm not paranoid (I'm not doing anything illegal!), and I like building communities over the years.
- Secondly, the Barter admin was a self-confessed newbie (albeit a dedicated and talented newbie) when it comes to building a website. I've been doing that since March 15, 1996. Tomorrow will be my 21st anniversary as a webmaster. That's a LONG time. All of my old sites are still online, including the first one (namida.cyna.fr), projects I abandoned or finished years ago (ency.cyna.net, kyodai.com), etc. Ask anyone who's on my other sites-- you're safe with me as the admin.
- Thirdly, 99% of the website is already open source. Just check out https://github.com/Wedge/wedge and you can download most of the code. There's only about 150KB worth of code that's specific to Lestrade's and I'm keeping to myself for now. If I feel inadequate for the job in the future, I'll open-source it for someone else to help improve it. Other than that, there's no reason to do so.
Feel free to send pull requests for Wedge. Strangely, it's been years since I've seen someone send a pull request for a big new feature in Wedge (namely the notification system). I'm open to contributions. But it's a huge codebase and I doubt anyone will be interested.
I don't know what a federation system is. As for installing software-- you mean like Diaspora? Sure, that worked well for them... Desktop app? Then we're completely leaving the concept of a website aside. It's something I could do, I just don't see the point.
Maybe, but I've never heard the words 'federation' and 'block-chain' in the same sentence.
Well, obviously you're free not to use it.
But considering that I've spent a lot of time building a hopefully worthy successor and no one else felt like they wanted to do it, I'm afraid you're stuck with me and my appalingly boring design decisions.
something seems to have gone wrong on the 2nd batch though, he only created the offers but didn't propose them so 1000's of offers just timed out https://barter.vg/u/48e/o/
+1 to any successor being community-developed. No offense to Lestrades, but solo devs tend to get burnt out when it comes to managing large communities. It's great that you feel up to it, but you might not feel that way after managing a community for a year or two.
As for managing a large community-- who said I planned to do that?
I consider myself the builder. The architect, if you will. That doesn't mean I have to entertain my guests. :D I most certainly will, but I'm also planning to set up a site team that will handle the community. It'll come in time.
Nice job!! The new site looks really nice.
Active bundle mathes is a feature I'll really love in this new site ;-)
