Chat windows missing minimize / maximize, also related bugs.

Those buttons still exist for the library, and most windows do have the minimize button still, so why do I now need to use the taskbar to minimize chat windows?

Furthermore, if a chat window is minimized and the person sends me a message, a duplicate chat window opens and forcefully alt-tabs me out of the game I'm playing.

Worse yet, if a game is running (except windowed), I can't open chat windows at all. They close immediately, even if the game is no longer running. If I try to open a chat window while using the in-game overlay, it alt-tabs me out just to show me how the chat window fails to stay open. At least exiting and restarting Steam fixes this until the next time I dare reproduce this bug.

Pretty sure Valve are just making changes for the sake of making changes.
Could be because it works better on Deck that way where touchscreen is used instead of taskbar.

But why add Deck optimisations for all Steam users? nothing Valve has done recently makes sense if you do not have a DEck. Nothing. Not to mention all the other bugs this stuff for Deck has brought as in actual bugs not just the unintuitive changes that Valve have fully intended to implement.


Steam has never been so horribly flaky, broken and bug riddled than what it is today. Never.

And Valve just keep on piling in more useless "features" it just feels more and more like bloatware. Steam has never been so horrible to use.

Fwiw, at least they eventually fixed the memory leak that had been plaguing chat windows since the new design in 2019. This new bug is quite something though.

This started happening to me today as well, chat windows closing, duplicate chat windows, the game alt-tabbing when i receive a message, and no minimize/maximize options. I do think it's a bug though, one of my friends still has the options and it isn't exhibiting the same behavior.

Me and my friend from korea are both getting this bug this is horrible and I hope they fix this a.s.a.p let me know if you figure out a solution. Looking around some have had this bug for 4 years. Yikes...

Hopefully that doesn't happen to us, but yeah i'll post if anything changes.

The system seems to just be having odd bugs right now, for me it keeps wanting to open a duplicate chat window over and over lol.

I can confirm a similar issue is happening to me.
This started some time today, maybe a few hours ago at most. It worked fine earlier today.
The option to dock the chat window(s) to the friend list is completely broken. The maximize and minimize buttons are missing from friend list and also chat windows as well.

Seems like maintenance caused some new issues. People are also noticing that docking is messed up.

That really sucks this is happening to you but glad we are not alone this is one of the worst bugs that I have had on steam because it's kicking me out of competitive games if I receive a message and if I get out of the game my friends list is frozen......

This has happened to me today as well. It was working fine 6 hours ago when I turned off my computer. Now I've turned it back on and there are no minimize / maximize buttons on the friends list or chat window. Very annoying, as I can't find a way to minimize them and they are quite distracting.
Edit: I've resorted to using the windows key + down arrow to minimize them. At least that provides a temporary solution.

Ever since I started using the new BPM, the friend chat has been acting so crazy. Every time I try to chat with someone, a new window pops up regardless of my settings and even if I already have the chat window/tab of them opened.

I'm also experiencing this weird bug right now, I been using the dock chat option for years and suddenly today it was acting all up and every new chat pops up all alone instead of being grouped with the other chat tabs, which is just extremely frustrating.

Yip - completely a mess at the moment. Going back to stable as it's gradually getting worse each update.

Duplicate chat windows, chat windows losing their docking, dead links, popups within popups within popups, mouse jumping around the screen on closing popups, windows resizing to unfixable with only way to recover is restarting Steam.

Anyone else using 4k monitor with unusually large windows scaling? (Mine set to 200%). Seems a possible candidate for these new issues.

I'm having the same issues, duplicate chat msg windows opening whenever i get a new msg, it force alt-tabbing games when new msgs come in, chats not properly snapping to the friends list window if it even allows me to open them and if they do open closing immediately after in some instances, and occasionally not allowing me to send msgs at all, ive tried restarting steam, searching for client updates and signing out & back in but its still happening
