I also pointed out why this doesn't work in my OP.
I think you overlooked this work around I mentioned. The difference between button pad and directional pad is you can bind the whole pad click to one action. If you set the required click setting to Off and leave all the directional bingding to blank, then you can bing that one button click to what you what.

I had to uninstall the beta because of page scrolling issues, but I will try this after the next update. It could work, although I still wonder if that setting will cover the entire touchpad area - does it work even if I only touch on one of the far corners?
Thanks for explaining it in any case. I do still hope Valve simplifies things by simply making a single button option for "style of input".
