Steam icon replaced by the windows unknown application icon in the taskbar

ISSUE

Upon opening of the main steam window, the icon displayed in the taskbar is not steam's normal icon, but the windows default unknown application one.

Windows 7 64 bit

STEPS

1. Start steam

2. Open main window

RESULTS

The icon displayed is not the steam icon, but the windows unknown application icon (first one in shell32.dll, the highlighted one here[www.liewcf.com])

EXPECTED

The steam icon should be displayed.

RESOLUTION

I've looked at the resources of the Steam.exe file, there seem complete and clean. It might be more of a windows problem. I've made a guide available here.

NOTES

The icon is also missing (replaced by the same one) in the contextual menu when opened via right-clicking the not-found steam icon in the taskbar.
I suspect that the icon resource in the steam binary is corrupted/scrambled.

Have same bug, but with sven coop icon (mod is installed) instead of steam icon.

Replaced icon there too and also instead of "Steam" label i have "Play Sven Co-op!"

Also thank you for guide how to get steam icon back. I haven't got steam pinned, but pin and unpin works for icon bug.

bug is back after new beta update, same as before

yes, but to icon remain steam icon i need to restart steam, no need to pin/unpin. pin/unpin just work till steam window is still on (i have unpined steam)

i also have this problem. my steam icon is sven coop. if i right click on my steam icon in taskbar, it shows sven coop options. pin/unpin works only for a while. if i right click steam icon, sven coop icon i shown.

exacly, Sven Co-op icon. Still have this issue. My work around is to relaunch steam twice every update, 2nd time is normal icon.
ps. I don't have my steam pined to taskbar, nor menu, just old-style quick launch buttons.
