Ps5 controller not working(SOLVED)
My ps5 controller has stopped working on all games since the last steam update. It gets recognized as an xbox controller. last time it did this i was still able to use my controller, but with oddball button settings.

however it doesnt work at all. PC Recognizes its connect, steam even recognizes its connected (when ii open big picture mode, the controller inputs work and are correct)

Soon as I open a game though, nothing on the controller works.

*edit*

Found a fix (for ps5 controllers anyways)

I went to settings>controller>general controller settings and i enabled "xbox configuration support" and "xbox extended feature support". It downloaded some xbox driver. restarted my computer. Ps5 controller works on games now AND its acting like a ps5 controller. None of my buttons needed configuring to an xbox.

* Edit 2 and fixed*

With the help of Slouken and his amazing tech skills. There was another permanent fix to this. The result of this bug may have come from anyone messing around with their controller settings in Steam>settings>controller> general controller settings. and changing button configuration and accidentally saving it to an xbox 1 controller. (like myself)
Quoted from Slouken
"So it turns out that Xbox One is the default controller type in that dropdown, so if you don't explicitly set something, that's what it will pick.
So anyone who tries to rebind their controller will turn it into an Xbox One controller."

By going to C/programfiles(86)/steam. typing in search bar "config.vdf" click on config and open it in note pad. hit Ctrl F search "dev:" and delete the whole line starting with "SDL_GamepadBind" and clicking save.

This changed my ps5 controller (which was being detected as an xbox 1 controller) back to a ps5 controller. Problem solved for me. Thanks Sloukan! :D

You didn't check "Playstation Configuration Support" in controller settings, did you?

Bro, he said that the gamepad is recognized as Xbox controller

I just checked. There is no update for ps5 controllers. Everything's already up to date.
I have a similar issue with my controller which works, besides the right-hand pads. ALL buttons function in games besides those 2. (Checked if they function outside Steam)
When Steam Input detects/shows PS type controller as an xbox type controller you should be able to go to main settings and "define layout" and then save that layout as a PS type controller so you see appropriate button prompts in game and Big Picture UI.

Valve have disabled trackpads on PS5 controllers in Deck preview channel - which always used to work as trackpad with older versions of Steam Input and older PS type controllers.

All these recent changes regarding removal of Steam Input features and broken Steam Input features are all caused by Valve prioritising development of Deck and adding Deck controls as primary Steam Input priority. Basically Steam Input is being rebuilt from ground up for Steam Deck controls which makes it rational to call Steam Deck controls Steam Controller 2.0 when talking about the current state of Steam Input. imo Valve should have did what they initially did when building Steam Input for Steam Controller being the only supported device until they get Deck controls working - bug free.
I have the same. This is 3rd time that update create probem im dual sense
Are you running DS4Windows or some similar gamepad mapping software?

f*ck if i know. Ive never really put much effort into it. Just plugged my controller in and if it works it works. Ive never intentionally downloaded or installed any gamepad mapping software to my knowledge.
lol you dont sound very sure. "Just plugged it in ..." is a solid "Nope"

What you describe about the xbox extended feature drivers in OP to get your PS 5 controller working in games is scarily bad and unexpected behaviour. Hopefully slouken or other Valve devs can reproduce. Only then can we hope for bug fixes. Steam Input should detect your controller as PS type out of the box using usb hid nowadays afaiu You are describing old expected behaviour when Steam Input actually was fully functional and astronomically far less buggy.

Something going on under the hood somewhere in Steam runtime that Steam Input gui's (main controller settings, libray manage > properties > controller options and game configs) have not been updated for so end users can not manage it/them.

It would be really cool if slouken or anybody else could share some insight into how and why PS type controller support has changed so much recently and why or how it is so broken My Thrustmaster T500 RS which is a PS licenced device seems to have been blacklisted by Valve so does not get detected by Steam Input like it used to. It used to get detected as xbox type controller but i used to just use define layout using wheel buttons and wheel base buttons and save as PS3 type controller. Not a game breaking issue as i had to disable Steam Input for game for it to work like expected in games that support it but miss being able to navigate Big picture out with game using it.

@slouken or any other Valve dev please have a look at https://steamcommunity.com/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/3/3546050190325937250/ where Steam Input detecting a PS3 type controller can not map left stick click or right stick click in define layout and do not work in Steam games. Those buttons work like expected when running a non Steam game through Steam client. The Steam users's controller there get detected as PS type controller by Steam Input out of the box, unlike OP. But does not work at all in games if define layout is used to save layout as an xbox type controller. Must of forgot to enable the xbox extended feature drivers! (roflol)
Same thing.
1. I hid my Dualsense in steam controller settings before and that was the only way to make it work in FIFA 23 as intended without xbox prompts.
2. Unhide and hide again doesnt work today.
3. Controller is not working in any windows app when steam is lauched since recent update.
4. I cant download xbox device support driver. It says "driver installation failed"
5. The main problem is that i CANT PLAY FIFA 23 WITHOUT STEAM LAUNCHED.
ffs its getting rediculous with this steam input ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

I sent an e-mail to the address associated with your Steam account to help debug this.

Thanks!

I have updated the Forum post with the fix he provided for me. I hope this helps anyone else with this issue as well.
Yep thanks for updating and sharing sloukens explanation and workaround until bug fixes are provided.
