FAR (Fix Automata Resolution)
Special K[wiki.special-k.info] features NieR: Automata specific tweaks and features (collectively known as FAR) created by Kaldaien with contributions from various individuals. For years these tweaks were essential to fix various issues the Steam version of the game suffered from, and many of these features and fixes made their way into the game officially following an update to the game released by Square Enix on July 15, 2021.

With the current state of the game Special K is no longer as essential though it still features improvements to the latest version of the game that some may find beneficial:
  • Enables much faster loading times.
  • Can improve the frame pacing of the game and eliminate micro stuttering.
  • Decrease the global illumination below that of the lowest setting of the game for a major performance improvement.
  • As well as various other minor fixes and features that improves the overall rendering pipeline and latency, such as Nvidia Reflex integration.

For updated information please see the Special K wiki:
https://wiki.special-k.info/SpecialK/Custom/FAR

Uninstall outdated versions of FAR

The legacy version of FAR (v 0.7.0.23) is not compatible with the new updated Steam version, and the game will fail to launch if left in the game folder. The files related to FAR needs to be removed manually from the game folder, so please remove them from the game folder. This is most easily done by removing any and all files that is not shown in the below image.

  • This is how a fully cleaned out folder looks like after the game has been launched once:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2559265741
  • If the game has not been launched yet another executable along with some batch files will also exist in the folder.

  • Only GOTY owners have the Wallpaper folder.

  • Validating game files or uninstalling/reinstalling the game through Steam will not remove third-party files, such as FAR, from the game folder.

These are the files and folders related to older versions of FAR:
Name
Type
Comment
dinput8
Files
Remove any file with dinput8 in its name. These are the main components of FAR.
FAR.ini
File
Holds NieR: Automata tweaks config.
d3d11_shaders.ini
File
Holds outdated shader config for the outdated custom ReShade of FAR.
Version
Folder
Holds non-functioning auto-updater version data.
logs
Folder
Holds FAR diagnostics logs.
ReShade
File/Folder
Any file or folder with ReShade in its name is related to FAR's outdated custom version of ReShade.

It's because that 21:9 fix is using a modified version of BALDMAN's v3 crack and ships with a Steam API emulator on top of it. You might have legally bought the game, but you're effectively running an illegal copy. :<

And just so you know, this has naught to do with anything I've done. I don't actually have anti-piracy in my software contrary to what the idiots on Crackwatch insist. I have code that can usually detect unofficial executables and SteamAPI DLLs to try and avoid problems like this.

The pirates do a good enough job making their software incompatible that even if I wanted to get up on a soap box and preach anti-piracy, I wouldn't have to. The software already disintegrates on its own :)

If only the average pirate wasn't so dumb as to think their halfbaked bypasses are beyond criticism. Stuff ain't very stable a lot of the time.

Ultrawide users really need to find a way to do this stuff in real-time with cheat-engine or something rather than wholesale replacing exes and stuff.

Believe it or not, if such a time came that say 70% of people were running a pirated version (don't quite know why, but we can speculate), I would actually maintain compatibility with it. It's simple majority rule, I'm not going to spend time testing my software for two versions of a game. The one that the community is most engaged with is the one I use.

Many games on GOG are in this sort of situation (pirated executables are distributed and by far the most common version of the game floating around). Any new mod written for the game would almost certainly target the modern release that CD Projekt tries to maintain compatibility with, even if they nix'd the DRM by selling NOCD cracks; Ironic given their name :)

It is most likely more than possible to do it using DLL injections or similar techniques. Hell, even trainers can do insane tricks without actually modifying the game executable.

In the case of this 21:9 fix I believe we're mostly talking about 10-20 changes or so in the executable, of which most are hard-coded resolution changes which is why the creator ships a ton of different executables for the common 21:9 resolutions. If I remember it correctly then the only major change I found when performing a differential check between this and the original BALDMAN v3 crack was a new function or two that were implemented in one of the "empty" padding areas of the executable that Denuvo seems to cause.

I wouldn't be surprised if the creator were able to convert the mod quite easily into a DLL injector since it seems rather simplistic in its approach.

Just wanted to ask if this mod is still supported? If so I am having problems getting the config menu to show up via Ctrl-Shift-Backspace. The game closes everytime I do it. So I took the liberty to upload my logs to Pastebin.com for the mod moderators or author to hopefully take a look at my situation and offer some advice. Its under "Nier Automata Problem" with the name "Judahpeter."

Thanks in advance.

You'll have to share the exact unique link(s) to the pastes on the pastebin.com site. We can't access them otherwise.

Might be BitDefender's Active Threat Control module. I stopped using BitDefender since that module frequently prevented some games from working correctly on my system. You should have an option to disable or turn off Active Threat Control fully through BitDefender's settings.

I checked Bitdefender and it hasn't blocked anything for the last 30 days, but just to be sure I disabled it and nothing changed. The game still closes/crashes when I Ctrl-Shift-Backspace.

Thanks for the help.

Try disabling Ansel. Go to Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Ansel\Tools and set it to disable.

I was pleasantly suprised that your offered your help. This is the Exe correct?

"NvCameraConfiguration.exe" and click the bullet circle next to NVCamera? I set it there to disable.

Thank you for the advice, but it's still a no go. Same crash/close happens after disabling Ansel.

Yes, that's the correct exe. I'm sorry to hear that didn't help.

If you by any chance have any of this apps installed, they are known to interfere with Kal's mod: RivaTuner Statistics Server, Discord, FRAPS and Razer software.

Also, when your game crashes, do you hear the Metal Gear sound? If so, that means that the mod caught an error and generated a crash.log which you should paste to Pastebin in order to get further help.
Judah Jul 18, 2018 @ 12:46pm
Thanks again Giancarlo.

I did find that I had Discord installed. I uninstalled it and ran the game again and tried the Ctrl-Shift-Backspace key combo; Still closes and not working.

I DO NOT hear anything let alone a metal gear sound when the game closes. I did however upload the latest crash.log to Pastebin.com

You seem to be running Stardock, have you tried temporarily disabling that?
