Special K - v 0.6.34 [Injector] - (10/28/16)
Preliminary Support for System-Wide Injection

This will walk you through getting Special K to work automatically when a game starts up, rather than dropping a DLL into a directory and renaming it. This serves primarily as a convenience, but is actually required by some games (e.g. STEINS;GATE).

    Secure Boot needs to be disabled for this to work; it uses the same approach as GeDoSaTo does.


Step 0: Installation

    Download
      Grab SKIM.exe or SKIM64.exe here[github.com]
    Install
      Run SKIM.exe
        (SKIM64.exe may give you less anti-virus problems, but hasn't been tested as well)
    Uninstall
      Run SKIM.exe

Step 1: Opting-in to global injection (for non-Steam games)

    For the global injector to work in a non-Steam game, create an empty file in the game's directory and give it one of the following names:

    1. SpecialK.d3d9
      • If the game uses D3D9
    2. SpecialK.dxgi
      • If the game uses D3D10/11/12
    3. SpecialK.OpenGL32
      • If the game uses OpenGL

    Special K is automatically injected into Steam games and you do not have to concern yourself with graphics API.

Location of Configuration and Log Files

Games using the global injector will store their configuration and log files per-exe under %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Mods\SpecialK\Profiles\<EXENAME>\....

    If you run the game manually as administrator, a symlink called SpecialK will be created in the game's directory to make accessing the config files easier.

I'd really just suggest you run that game in D3D9 mode. The link I posted a page back has details on doing that, it involves setting D3D_90 somehwere. It was discussed that SweetFX only works correctly in D3D9 mode in that game.

I am an expert at OpenGL, but cannot work my magic for a game I do not even own ;)

It's used only to get smaa to work :). I had it working with OpenGL but I eventually switched it to d3d9 to be able to use smaa in reshade. It works fine with OpenGL just that some of the stuff in ReShade won't work properly.

This game is actually really weird and I don't even own it "legitely". But I read on forums that this game has been setup to use more than one renderer if need be and be able to switch from a select few. In fact it was a developer who stated the d3d9 method to make all the features in resahde to work. It's kinda funny though. I wasn't able to even get 0.6.0 version to work properly until you told me that renderer change.

And I must repeat. I did use that method and I got an error telling me that my GPU doesn't support 3.0 Shaders and to download latest Drivers lol. I know for a fact that my GPU has those shaders. That was with universal method without reshade or anything loaded.
So I tried the universal Method with Fallout 4 and found out something interesting when using F4SE, which is fallout 4's script extender launcher. It will make ini files for both f4se launcher and fallout 4 executiable. This is from simply running F4SE as admin btw. :).

As long as I set Swapchain Buffer count to 2 and prerender to -1 setting it will boot. But here is the catch. For some reason I have to run F4SE executiable as admin in order for fallout 4 executiable to run properly. If I don't run the f4se executiable as admin the game crashes and states that fallout 4 has that acess denied message or something. Permissions.

Now another thing if running F4SE executiable for fallout 4 make sure both dxgi.ini files in the two locations are exactly the same. Otherwise I am sure the game will get confused. Quite extraordinary actually.

Also I have both ENB and ReShade working side by side now in fallout 4. Had to take out ReShade files from Subfolder within directory to make it run like I had to with Titan Quest but it is definitely working. :). Basically running ReShade as your supposed to :).

I am super stoked and loving it a lot. Problem is I think the f4se launcher doesn't like swapchain buffer at 5 and pre-render at 3. If I set those to that then the game simply exits out without a single crash log or anything.

The launcher should really just be using the default DXGI settings. Part of the reason I designed it this way (...My Mods/Special K/<app.exe>/dxgi.ini) was so that launchers could be treated differently than the actual game.

It's only Fallout 4.exe that should need any kind of configuration tweaking. In fact, in a later release I am going to add a "blacklist" feature, and this is how you will be able to prevent my DLL from being loaded by a game's launcher.

Okay b/c now I am getting the crash error again.

Should try just running fallout 4 executiable only then trying to launch f4se and see if that changes anything.

For the launcher's config, take out nearly everything. Set silent=true for Steam, make sure the DXGI settings are default, turn the crash handler off, etc. That will get you as close to having no DLL loaded as possible.

Funny you mention that. I just deleted the f4se launcher config and it recreated it but I didn't change anything in that config file. I have two dxgi.log files and one is the f4se launcher and other is for fallout 4 one. :).

It seems that the FO4 executiable one is working as intended and not crashing. While I left F4SE config file alone without making a single change. :)

Arrg it's crashing again. Dangit. I though I had it working. Even tried disabling everything in f4se exe in file.
I have something that may help you out with f4se.

Grab 0.6.4 from the GitHub release page, and then create a file called SpecialK.deny.f4se_loader
Yup 0.6.4 Version works. It doesn't make a config file for F4SE and it runs nicely :). Found out that I had to make sure borderless mode was only thing running for Fallout4. It apparently doesn't set it up correctly in the launcher lol.

Good news, the latest version 0.6.4 works with Obduction without any issues. And I decided to try it out and didn't even have to put that section for ReShade. It loaded perfectly fine without any need for the reshade section.

o.O That is pure amazing.

Edit:
Just reminder I couldn't get Obduction to work with this universal injector either but now it works flawlessly with reshade :). I am super excited. Now I can see if it can handle the texture caching much better than the game. This game needs it bad since it loads textures all into committed memory very heavily.

Does this work with Grim Dawn? And what renderer is it using? I never seen a game put a whole bunch of directx files and opengl32 files in one directory. I am using the GOG version btw.

Grim Dawn uses D3D9Ex. For a long time I was unable to get Special K to work with that game, but within about the past 2 months I finally found a solution that works :)

I do not know if the global injector works. It's definitely a game to keep an eye on for compatibility testing. Another one is Metal Gear Solid V, that's a very finicky D3D11 game that confuses even ReShade -- I am happy to say it does not confuse SK.

Okay what do I have to do to get it to work? B/c in my directory it has like every directx file and opengl32 file in it. The basic ones I mean. I mean I can't really stick your dll fix inside the folder unelss I overwrite the original dll's in the directory that for some odd reason is in there.

I did reshade and it overwrote the damn directx 9 file. MY god I hope it doesn't break something in the game. lol.

Okay So I deleted the damn d3d9.dll file that was in there and the game booted up fine. Why did the installer put all those dll's in there. GOG installer btw.

Nevermind I got it to work :). Using SpecialK 0.6.0 I was able to do it. Oddly I didn't have to change hook type or set D3d9EX to true.
