Grenzers were originally made to guard the border between the Ottoman Empire and Austrian Empire. During wartime they were incorprated into the Austrian army. All Grenzers were trained in marksmanship and skirmishing, usually acting as advanced-guards. They could be deployed in open order but still were able to fight like the line infantry. Grenzers were ill-equipped, untrained, and lacked discipline, but they made up for it in combat. In many combat situations they typically were the first to the battle and last to retreat, facing 66% casualties on average and would take rear guard positions to cover the retreat of the regular army.
