HEADQUARTERS TENTH UNITED STATES INFANTRY,
September 16, 1862.

I have the honor to report the part taken by the Tenth United States Infantry in the action of the 15th of September to be as follows:

We moved out of camp and regiment was formed behind the hill the left of the graveyard in good order. The rebels were repeatedly assaulting the 1st Maryland Infantry of the Potomac Home Brigade to our right, which had taken up a position behind the stonewall facing the graveyard. We moved forward on the double-quick, and poured musketry into the rebels every time they made a move to attack, where upon we resumed our position below the crest of the hill. The rebels soon grew wise to our presence and planted a battery some distance away and opened on us with a heavy fire, but while they killed several of our men the regiment maintained good discipline. The rebels attempted to flank us down the road, but the men responded quickly and forced them to retire. After a last, ferocious assault by the rebels on the 1st Maryland at the stonewall, they were forced to cede the field to our victorious army, having taken heavy losses. Our men counted about 380 dead and wounded rebels on the field, the wounded being taken prisoner. The combined losses of the 1st Maryland and 10th US were similar, and we counted about 110 killed and 240 wounded, with 20 missing, for a total of 370 casualties.

To mention individual instances of bravery displayed in the battle by any single individual would be but doing injustice to others. Both officers and men did their whole duty, without a single exception; but I must speak of the following officer in the highest terms: 2nd Lieutenant M. Jack was active in urging the men forward and performed his duty well. As such I hereby have the honor of granting upon 2nd Lieutenant M. Jack the rank of 1st Lieutenant. The line officers all behaved themselves nobly; so did the whole command. Captain Kronnabis was also granted the rank of Major shortly before the battle, but he was not present at the battle due to a sickness which laid him up in camp, much to his annoyance.
