I'm refunding for now. Here's why.

I won't leave a negative review because I can see the game is still in active development, and I'm an optimist; I see a lot of unrealized potential here and I want to believe it will turn into the game I actually want to play someday ;-p. Maybe I'll buy again if it ever goes on sale, or if a ton of features are added.

I'll leave all the constructive criticism I can here instead, based on the just under 2 hours of play I was able to run through (and the youtube videos I watched to confirm the rest of the game was more of the same):

For a seasoned chess player, the core gameplay is simple but surprisingly addictive. A great basis to build a game on. The audiovisual presentation helps, with pretty models and locations, crunchy sounds, and smooth animations. It conveys a visceral feeling of taking barbaric revenge for all your lost chess matches, which is quite satisfying ;-p

Unfortunately, the strong foundation can't sustain the game for me. The biggest problem here is that there just isn't enough meat on the bones. It feels like mindless grinding and empty calories: make mostly obvious moves, use mana/potions to string through difficult battles, repeat. The AI is not very intelligent, so when you do get into a challenging position it seems to happen by accident, and there's no drama to it, because it's just one more turn among thousands of unremarkable choices where there is little chance of losing important material. The AI can only compete by brute force, sending huge numbers of pieces at you. 90% of the time you will be fine moving on pure instinct with zero analysis, as long as you've managed resources adequately, you will mash through without trouble. Maybe this is interesting for those just learning how the pieces move, or with little interest in chess, but for me it got boring really quickly, and stat boosting with items doesn't add much. The risk of failing is low, and when you do, it's a long slog through the same boring encounters a second time.

In my opinion this is a tactical game at its core, and you should really concentrate on adding tactical richness. That means better AI (or far more deliberately designed puzzle-like levels), and items, spells and environmental features that have direct tactical implications, not just modifying statistical attrition. There are a lot of items but it doesn't feel like you have to think deliberately about which to use. There's a huge spectrum of ideas you could imitate from countless classic tactical games. I don't think you even need to do anything new, just something *more.* The chess twist can carry it from there.

But as it is now, the level of tactical variety is so low, it feels like more of a hack and slash or action RPG, which doesn't gel with the chess mechanics and leaves this player cold.
