The issue remains that Ichiban just isn't that guy for a lot of people. Nobody has issues with Yagami from the Judgment franchise being that guy. He's a great protagonist and I really wish that they'd give us another game in that series.

Similarly, most every "Witcher" fan seems to be okay switching over to Ciri as the star of the next game. Opinions are dramatically more mixed on the idea of switching to Atreus in the God of War games. I'd argue the majority are strongly against making that switch because Atreus is very divisive and a lot of people consider the worst parts of GoW Ragnarok to be the Atreus sections.

Basically, you have to really do a good job of setting up a major protagonist switch and RGG simply hasn't managed it with trying to go from Kiryu to Ichiban. This isn't saying that NOBODY would be okay with it, but I think it is pretty obvious that a LOT of people simply prefer Kiryu to Ichiban and probably excitement for this game would have been a lot less if it wasn't known going in that Kiryu would have a major role.

Basically, I think you're right in your main point. Without trotting Kiryu out over and over again, they don't have confidence that Ichiban will be able to sell the next game the same way. Whatever they may SAY about Ichi being the future and all that, actions speak louder than words. Their actions continuing to go back to Kiryu over and over again show what they really think.

Personally, I think they are correct in this. I tuned into this game for the Kiryu parts and not because I cared in the least about, for example, Ichiban's toxic, "wacky" relationship with Saeko.
