Like 5 if You have that huge battle thingy in the region. But it can´t be a doomstack, when the corpses die. A doomstack can only be a doomstack when they survive. Also good luck sending them against high elves, wood elves, or dark elves - or any other faction with many ranged weapons. Like for VCoast You´re better off getting some more hand gunners. These also have a "huge pool". I for myself rather used the pool to replace the melee zombies. Usually 5 of them would be sufficient. 2 with polearms, and 3 others. Then 7 hand gunners, 2 deck gunners, and 2 cannons + 2 mortars. These stacks even worked in the late game. One can switch the cheap frontline with depth guards, but it´s not really worth it. And one can switch the two mortars with 2 other units. - or add another deck gunner unit for one hand gunner unit.

The main issue of VCoast is that they don´t have much money, so You probably don´t want to replace units too often, even if they have easy access to them.

Also yes - the warp lightning thing seems to be the better option.
