A quick googlebing search would point you to the right direction:

Every Stardock game (of old) has this 'first start' behavior: the game executable is trying to detect your (EDID) monitor resolution and trying to use the 'highest resolution', to create a first-start settings.ini file.

If your resolution is something it does not understand, it fails.

To resolve this - and it is the easiest thing to resolve - is

A) to use a common VGA resolution and try again using the 'safe settings' option in the launcher, OR ...

B) edit the settings.ini text file, inside your Documents folder and set the width/height manually.

Problem solved.

I would recommend to him to start practicing hit confirms. One good practice I found now is to set the dummy to random block and set the block and hit reversals to the OD DP.

Go for cr.MK -> DRC and then if the low kick was blocked, go for light punch and block, if it wasn't, go for something like 5HP, 5MK, light tatsu into hard shoryuken. (assuming he uses Akuma).
