Bro they can't change time? (Spoilers)
Ursprungligen skrivet av FarOutFantasy:
Honestly it would be interesting if all junctions where canon and each junction is in its own timeline. And while time cannot be changed, there are multiple timelines, each with their own unique events playing out differently.

Intriguingly enough, Sam Lake (one of the lead creatives at Remedy) claimed just that in the foreward for the Quantum Break novel. I'm paraphrasing heavily here, but he claimed that Quantum Break is a multiverse and that each combination of player choices represents a different timeline and is canon for that particular timeline. Which is really quite nice of him. Better than Ubisoft going "if you picked Alexios instead of Kassandra for Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, you picked a what-if story that never happened. Take that!"

So yeah, there are multiple timelines with their own variations of events playing out, but each is unfortunately very fixed. Jack can't change how his particular timeline plays out, even though he wants to. Though God bless him for keeping his optimism while Beth, Paul, and Will all face the brutal reality and despair. :-D

Also, yeah... Shifters are every possible version of themselves all at once. Hence why they can't really die. Even when Martin Hatch gets stabbed in the eye, there are an infinite amount of other Martin Hatchs who never got stabbed in the eye. Who weren't even in the same building at the same time. As long as there are healthy other versions of him at the same time, he's A-Okay. Just a minor inconvenience.

I know that the game ends with that interview question and Jack promising Beth that he'll save her, and Jack clearly wants to find a way to change time. However, it's also implied throughout the story that Jack doesn't really understand how time travel works here.

Will gets it because he invented the machine and spoke with Beth post-travel. Paul gets it because he's suffered it for 17 years. Beth gets it because she suffered through it as well. Jack... doesn't. That's why Will corrects him so many times at the university in Act 5. "We can't save the protesters. They get executed by Monarch. It's already effectively happened." "You didn't change time by saving me. Your past self never saw my death. You just assumed that I died, when in reality your future self always rescued me." That guard who got randomly shot in the head in Act 1 when you were going to rescue Will? That was you from Act 5. The Act 5 rescue was already happening and was already part of the timeline in Act 1. You're just closing the loop in Act 5 by doing what you, unknowingly, were always going to do... which is delightfully bizarre.
